What is the law regarding 15 year olds going to a pub?

We have some friends here with their 15 year old son and they would like to take him to a pub one evening. He doesn't want to drink alcohol, he'll be with his parents and they will eat a meal.

I thought this was ok from the age of 14 and I understand that some pubs will have their own policies especially on weekend nights.

So I'm happy to ring around a few places to see what their policy is but I'd feel more comfortable knowing the law beforehand.

Pubs can essentially decide whether they allow children or not. A few have a licence that doesn't allow children, and he won't be allowed to buy or drink alcohol, but there is no overall law about age on premises. Some may allow children until a certain time, so it is worth checking.

Ooh and can someone clarify the law on under-18s drinking alcohol in a restaurant with a meal. Sorry to hijack.....

The law always used to be if you are 16 AND are eating a meal with adults you could drink wine or beer.

See here. Google is your friend.
