Advice about Bailiffs PLEASE

A bloke knocked on my door this afternoon - I never answer the door unless it's the postie as we get inundated with people selling stuff or looking to fix the roof and suchlike, so we ignored the knock.
I was in the kitchen but my 8 and 5 yr old Dss were in the living room. Anyway, the bloke looked in through the window and shouted to ask the boys if their parents were out. No3 son said yes and the bloke said "well tell them it's the bailiffs and we will be back tomorrow" and went away.
Now we don't owe anyone anything that I can think of tht we haven't paid up to date -we have a mortgage and the ususal household stuff, but it's all up to date.
I want to think this bloke was just being a tosser, but if he does come back, what do I legally have to tell him?
If he's got the wrong house/wrong people (we've been here 12 years) do I have to prove who we are or does he have to prove who we are iykwim?
Do I have to let them in?
What paperwork should he have, and what should I be looking for on it - and does he have to show it to me?
If it does turn out that somehow (and I really can't think how it could be) that we owe someone, shouldn't they have been sending us letters or something - can bailiffs just arrive out of the blue?
Any advice will be much appreciated cos I can't help this preying on my mind :( and I will be alone with my youngest DCs tomorrow.

Don't let them in. Speak to them through the chain on the door, the letterbox or an open upstairs window. Ask them what they're here for. They cannot come into your house without your invitation. They should have some paperwork which you can ask them to put through the letterbox.

Oh, and yes, if you owe someone, you should have had many letters, including a notice of court proceedings which comes before a bailiff's visit.

I thought that if we did owe something major enough to end up with bailiffs that we'd know Confused
We are skint Grin (isn't everyone these days?) but we aren't up to our eyeballs in debt, or missing payments on anything - I am trying to convince myself the bloke was just being a twat - maybe he saw me heading for the kitchen or something, I dunno, I'm just a bit of a worrier and want to be prepared just in case...

I would have thought they would post something through your door if they were baliffs asking you to contact them.

Nor should they be shouting that they are Bailiffs....tossers.

Well he never came back, so it looks as though he was just some random chugger being a tosser - poor no4 son though, he's only 6 and several times he said "that man can't really take the telly can he?" and we've had to keep all the windows closed and the doors locked all day until DH got home from work, to reassure him (no4 son) Confused
