HI,
hoping someone would be able to help me shed some light on this.

Had a visit today from a debt management guy sent by the Halifax as we have missed a couple of mortgage payments in the last few months - we're both self employed and had problems with late payers .

I was expecting this, nothing to worry about as the agent was concerned as our finances are much better now and we sorted out paying the outstanding amount.

Part of the questionnaire he'd been sent with asked him to find out why someone had made a request to see the deeds of the house. (These are with the Halifax, I presume?).

I was nonplussed and said I had no idea. He looked a bit uncomfortable. 'Ah. Might have been your husband and he forgot to mention it?' he said.
Hmm
ALARM BELLS
Shock

We've been having loads of problems for the last few years. I confronted him when he got home and basically ask if he'd asked for the deeds so he could find out about changing or some other dodgy reason.

He absolutely denied having asked for them, flat out. And I have to say I believed him. He's a CRAP lier, and this time he was totally convincing. So if not him, who could have asked to see deeds and WHY would they want to? Any ideas?

Obviously until I can call Halifax and Land Registry or whoever I need to call, I am totally in the dark here. Bit worrying. Anyone?

Could someone else of requested to see them?

Did your husband seem concerned that could be an explanation, how did he rationalise it?

Wouldn't you have to sign something.

sorry i couldn't log on again last night. He seemed really shocked - that's why I ddon't think he's lying about it.

I just need to know who else could want to have a look at the deeds and what they might want to see them for? Am mysitified

What type of mortgage do you have? If it's one tied to an endowment policy, it could be that someone has starting looking in the cashing in the policy early. To do this, the endowment company would make enquiries to the mortgage company about the deeds.

Was it shock because he didnt know why someone had requested the deeds, or shock because he realised he had been found oit?

Maybe your neighbour was simply checking the boundaries?

Unless you are on unregistered land which is unlikely then deeds are really only of historical interest. For about 3 pounds you can do a search for your property's records at the land registry.

Thanks, everyone, sorry I haven't been able to get access to computer to reply. All v interesting, but I do genuinely believe he doesn't know what's going on. Will ask the neighbours if it's a boundary thing...
THANKS
