Split in pregnancy, how to proceed with maintenance etc

Baby due in January. Ex-partner and I no longer together. The baby will live with me, but he wants to be as involved as possible, and has said he will pay half of childcare expenses. He is a foreign national (but bound by Hague convention) but ordinarily resident in London. I have been advised to have some kind of legal agreement in place about costs/access/maintenance etc.

The projected legal costs seem astronomical, though, and as neither of us has money to spare, it seems a bit mad to go down this route, especially as currently the situation is amiable.

Is there any way we could draw up an agreement between us and have it witnessed or something, which would be legally binding but not involve enormous expenditure? And if so, what should the agreement cover?

Any advice much wanted! Thank you.
