Speeding letter but it wasn't me!

I have received a letter from the Metropolitan police that my car was caught on a speed camera. I was at home at the time and my car was on my drive. I have never driven in London in this car.
The letter states that there is photographic evidence. I have never had any speeding points before and am very worried I will not be able to prove that is not my car.
I would be grateful for any advice on what to do next.
Thanks

Ask for the photographic evidence. It may be human error, or it may be someone's driving around with your number plate on. Either way, hopefully the picture will make it clear. Is there a number you can call? They're not monsters, I'm sure when you explain the situation they'll advise you what's the best thing to do. Don't panic!

Hi, I would contact them asap and ask for the photo of the car, I would explain what you just said and stand your ground, also perhaps look on the Gov website on appeal processes and contact the CAB for support??

Good luck

Are you sure the letter is real? When I accidentally drove in a bus lane, the Council sent me a picture of my car in said bus lane. If the police had photographic evidence why would they not send it?

Presumably there's a phone number on the letter to call? I would phone and say you dispute the evidence and what do they advise next? Is there no 'what to do next' info on the back of the letter, telling you you've got 14 days to cough up at half price etc?

usually the photographic evidence is available online, check out their website

Cloning number plates is a well known scam.

Don't panic for now, give the number a call tomorrow and see what they say.

My sister had this problem and it turned out a car of same make and model and colour was caught speeding and the number plate was identical except for an F/P. because of the light that day it looked like an F where my sister's car had a P.
it was quickly sorted out. Give them a call.

Thanks for your replies. There is no phone number on the letter but the postmark and address for the Traffic Criminal justice match up. I have 28 days to fill in form stating who was driving the car at the time.
I believe I can send a letter explaining without having to complete the form.
I am really worried I will not be able to prove it wasn't me.
I will try to find a phone number and call tomorrow.

It was at 11pm so maybe the number plate has been read incorrectly

Do you have an alibai ?

Redbookworm · 06/08/2013 19:12

I was at home with my husband and three children! That's my only alibi!

You must fill in the form and return it. Sending a letter back and not filling in the form is an offence all on its own.

I spoke to traffic police this morning. The lady took a look at the photo and said it is very grainy, the number plate is hard to see properly and it isn't the same make of car as mine so she is sending me a letter cancelling the speeding fine! :)

Excellent, you must be relieved!
