Copyright question

My daughter (primary school age) has been invited on a pop star singing experience party. On the website there is a consent section for all parents to agree to pre party. It would appear that if you do this you are allowing the company to use the images in any way they choose, FB, promotional material etc. None of the images on the company website are protected and can be downloaded.

I feel very uneasy about this and wonder if anyone had any thoughts or experience of this.

Strictly speaking, the copyright in a photograph belongs to the photographer and they are entitled to copy the images and use them however they want. It is considered good practice to obtain the consent of people in photographs for their use, but it is not a requirement.

It seems to me the concerns you have are to do with child protection, rather than copyright.

Have you asked the company what they would do if parents did not consent to the re-use of images of their children? You can't be the only parent to feel this way.

I know it is more of a child protection issue, I have worded it poorly. The party invite makes it clear that without the consent children cannot participate in the party.

I think I'll just have to Mum up and tell them how I feel about it.

Send her with REALLY dirty hair - you can guarantee they won't use her image then!

Seriously though, what exactly do you think might happen if they take a photograph of the group and bung it on their website?

In reality though the photos they use will be staged ones probably with really appealing looking model kids, not normal snotty-nose kids hiring the place for a party.

I don't feel comfortable with the idea that they will have all these images of little girls posing as pop stars and can put them up on website where there is no security and anyone can download them.
