Taxing a Newly Purchased Car

It has been a long time since I had to do this . How long do you have between buying the car (2nd hand) and taxing it . I know we need the documents which won't be handed over until we pay so do we have to drive to a PO straight away ?

From a thread on this other website:

www.policespecials.com/forum/index.php?/topic/111183-buying-an-untaxed-vehicletaxation-classes/

Go to the dealer and pay for the vehicle. Pick up the V5C, which will show the vehicle in the 'Disabled' taxation class. Drive to the DVLA local office, fill in the necessary bits of the V5C, and you'll also need to complete a form V10, they're available online if you wanted to fill it in beforehand to save a bit of time.

Once the forms are filled in, you'll be able to pay the DVLA their blood money, and they'll issue you with a VEL in the correct taxation class for your vehicle. They'll also take care of the re-registration of the vehicle on the V5C, and the change in taxation class on the V5C, which you'll get back through the post after about 4 weeks.

Then, armed with your (expensive) VEL, you drive back to the dealers, pop it in the window of your new wheels, and providing you've got insurance, you can drive your nice new (to you) vehicle home.

You could ask the dealer if he will tax it for you and pay the taxation mo ey on top so it can be done. That will save all the fading about you will have to do otherwise.

Really ? Nearest DVLA office is about 30miles away !

And all dvla office are closing this autumn!

RippingYarns · 19/07/2013 16:20

yes, i'd say Jake has the easiest and most simple solution - or is the car not taxed at all Confused

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 19/07/2013 16:20

We always get the dealer or seller to tax it before we buy. Once this meant the seller doing the round trip to the tax office at some inconvenience and expense, but that was the condition we placed on buying it.

Otherwise it is a massive hassle which you just don't need.

colleysmill · 19/07/2013 16:34

We bought an untaxed vehicle and just drove it to the nearest post office that did tax with the MOT off the seller, the log book and our insurance docs which they had emailed.

Didn't have too much of a problem

LIZS · 19/07/2013 16:35

It is on a forecourt so don't know its current status but they said they couldn't tax it for us due to regulations.

As much as it is a pain, in theory driving an untaxed car on a public road could lead to the police stopping you and impounding the car until you prove you are taxed and insured. I wouldn't chance it.

RippingYarns · 19/07/2013 16:56

i think you have to insure it before they can tax it for you

LIZS · 19/07/2013 16:58

Insurance sorted

Rockchick1984 · 20/07/2013 10:02

When buying from a dealer they have always taxed it for me and I've given them the money for it - think I'd be a bit concerned if they said they couldn't, it's always just been offered to me that way Confused

PandaNot · 20/07/2013 10:05

Dealers can always tax it for you, something sounds odd.

LIZS · 20/07/2013 11:47

Well we got round it by me taking my car to do the PO run . tbh I can't find anything recent about it online, apart from new vehicles can be registered by dealer but for used you need the V5. It's a legit dealership btw.

pop to post office on the way home? that's what I've always done and it was easy!

LIZS · 21/07/2013 06:29

Thanks , that was what dealer said but technically it is illegal! You'd have thought there would be a better system to avoid this, such as a week's cover note, but suppose it is open to fraud and abuse. Anyway job done now :)
