lease extension advice

DH and I are trying to extend the leasehold on our flat. We've had a quote in writing, but the letter asks us to provide our solicitors details.

We were hoping to be able to do it without a solicitor as we can't really afford one.

Is this possible, or is there a legal reason why we would have to have one? Any advice welcome.

I'm pretty sure you need a solicitor. It wasn't an option not to use one when I did mine.

Hi, assuming this is a long lease, it sounds like you need to obtain advice ideally from a chartered surveyor who is expert in leasehold enfranchisement. Get 3x fixed price quotes and compare. They will broker the deal with your landlord and will most likely work out cheaper than using a solicitor all the way through. they will agree the heads of terms for the new lease and will work with any solicitor you appoint to get the new lease contract in place. You will have to use a solicitor to finalise the lease document and complete the lease, and register it with land registry. You can ask solicitor for fixed price quotes in sale ilk as surveyor to get best deal. Good luck

You should be able to find a decent high street solicitor to deal with this for you. If you are mortgaged on the property, you'd be mad to agree a deal without proper legal advice. Even if you aren't on a mortgage, it would be inadvisable.
