A general question really for those who know:
My DH is shortly due to inherit some money from the sale of his late Mother's house.
The sum concerned will not take him into inheritance tax teritory but, will he be liable for income tax?
Sum concerned is approx £60,000.
He is retired.
Thank you

Sums received through inheritance aren't subject to income tax (they aren't "earnings").

Inheritance tax is calculated on the total value of the estate of the deceased rather than the assets of the beneficiaries.

Many thanks for your response future.
I know inheritance tax relates to the value of the estate of the deceased - I meant to say there will be no inheritance tax to pay on this estate therefore does the tax man try to get something via other routes - ie. income tax, capital gains tax or any other sort of tax?
We just don't want to mentally spend this cash and then find that a huge chunk of it will never be ours!

No - I agree with futuredad it's not counted as earnings for tax. It's all his to do with as he wishes Smile

Sorry for your loss.

I think if you usually complete a tax return then income tax will be payable on the interest earnt on the monies during the administration period, and if a solicitor is dealing with the estate they should let you know the amount earnt via their client account for that time. This is usually pennies though and shouldn't be of particular concern.

Other than that, no.
