Do (very) part-time workers still get sick-pay?

I work for a small company but only work on alternate weekends (Sat and Sun but only every other weekend). I've been there for over 2 years and have never had a day of sick. I have just had an accident which has left me unable to walk or drive for the next few weeks (hopefully no longer than that!!) and so last weekend I couldn't go to work for the first time. My boss was all very nice about it but at the end of the phone call said that I could take it either as unpaid leave, or as holiday. I didn't like to say anything at the time but have been thinking about it since and given that it is likely I might not be able to get to work on the next weekend I'm due in either, that will be two weekends (ie a whole month's money). I thought that by law companies had to treat part-time workers no less favorably than full-time, eg that I should get a pro-rata amount of sick leave and not have to take this as unpaid or holiday. I get two weekends a year as paid holiday but I always take them over the Christmas period when the company is shut anyway. To be honest I don't know what the company's sick-leave policy is for full-time staff. I know that the sensible thing would be to look for my contract but (thanks to the accident) I can't even stand up let alone go hunting around the house for something that I have no idea where it is!! So I just wondered if anyone knew, do companies have to offer part time workers sick-pay too? In total in a month over two weekends I only work 24 hours a month. By the way, I love working for this company and do not intend to get all militant about my rights or anything, I just would like to be in full possession of the facts in case I do mention it. Thanks.

Statutory sick pay is dependent on your NI contributions. Company sick pay (which it sounds like your company doesn't have) is entirely at the discretion of the company.

If your boss can't (due to a shortfall in NI) pay you SSP, then he should complete a form and you can then take this to the job centre (iirc) and they can arrange a payment.

This guide will help you work out if you are entitled.

Do you earn at least £218 per fortnight? (£109 per week). If you do you are eligible for SSP but it won't be very much if you only work 2 days per fortnight. Think it works out as just over £17 per day.

Hi, thanks for your answers. No, I earn £130 per weekend, so that's £260 for the whole month. Oh well, it was worth asking!
