Can't get legal aid, can't afford solicitor - what now?

For obvious reasons I don't want to put many details on here but I need a solicitor. I'm not entitled to legal aid and can't get advice and assistance either. I also can't afford a solicitor. Is there anything I can do?

Any advise would be great!

Approach local law school for pro bono advice from students if available? Or do research online and represent yourself?

What area of law?

Depending on the area of law, a lot of solicitors offer a free half hour consultation.

Citizens advise were useless, just told me to contact a solicitor. I believe it's criminal law. Would have no idea where to start in representing myself

Some charities are picking up and supporting people who would previously have been covered under legal aid. If you can say a bit more about the issue people may be able to advise.

Yes do see if you can give the bare bones of the details - name change and slightly alter place names etc. It's not my area of law but someone will probably be able to help you if you can give a bit of background. It's shocking that we've come to the point where people can't get representation for criminal matters.

Google `McKenzie Friend'. Read up on what they can and can't do.

If it's advise on child matters you need I recommend you contact Families Need Fathers. It's a parenting charity - not a fathers' rights group (about a third of the membership is female I think) and they'll give you practical pointers.

Their website also has a list of McKenzie Friends. FNF doesn't employ or recommend them however:

I am in the same position. I am unemployed, but my husband works, so can't get help. I have to take a case to the High Court, for a large amount of money. I cannot afford a solicitor. No win No fee Solicitor will not take it. If I win the case I will be able to pay the solicitor. Its a dispute with an Administrator of a company, as to how much my claim is worth.
