Tenancy law - anyone know if this is legal re. internet suppliers?

We're moving house and want to switch the internet supplier. We were told by one lettings agent (not the one dealing with this house, one we saw for a house we didn't end up taking) that it's not legal to insist on tenants using a particular service provider. Is she correct?

The LL is keep for us to keep using the old supplier he had, but we can't get shorter than an 18 month contract and the tenancy is only for a year, so it seems ridiculous really. I'm sure he will come around (he seems always to grouch a bit and then go with what we wanted), but I would like to be clear on the legal situation first.

Thanks!

If it's not in the contract, it's not in the contract.

Presumably, it's so the property keeps the same router or doesn't get altered.

Maybe the LL is on an 18m contract (having lived there), and doesn't want to lose out by cancelling, and wants you to take over?

The line rental can be supplied by whomever you like, no matter who provides thebroadband, although I believe Which have said it's always most cost-effective to "bundle".

You should be able to find out more on your rights at www.ofcom.org.uk, using tge search function for terms such as tenant, contract, provider, landlord... Some if the results are pdfs, which aren't easy for me to check on my ohone!

Is she asking you to take over an existing contract or is she expecting you to take over a new one with a particular supplier?

Is ths the same ll as the one with the books? I've only heard of this before when the internet was included with the rental in student houses.

we have always used who we want, having checked first and had no problems.

Thanks for replies! Sorry ... I posted this and then needed a reply in a hurry, so re-posted in Chat. Blush

But no, the contract only says the LL can't refuse permission for us to change without having a good reason, which it seems is the law anyway. But the agent thinks he is actually going to be keen enough to stick to the same provider that he will pay for the costs, which is extremely generous (if bewildering to me), so we are no longer too fussed. It was DH who cares which one we have anyway.

MrsH - yes. I'm liking your name for this question! Grin The books are in the loft, except the ones I kept out to read.
