Why have we got this letter?

Dh reversed into a parked car and caused damage to their door. Gave his details and told our insurers. He got a letter today from solicitor instructed by the other people claiming losses from the accident. The letter says we have to give our insurance details to this company. Why? Surely it all goes through insurance companies? Don't know her insurance details but know that our insurers have spoken to her already.
I assumed dh is at fault as she was parked. She was parked off road and the layout of other cars meant that dh had to reverse for some time as not possible to turn round but surely still his fault.

The letter has put they have comp insurance but left blank the bit about which is their insurance company and policy number. We have fully comp.

I would phone up your insurance company and ask them about it. I'm not sure what "losses" could be incurred but it may be that they are claiming for lost work due to having to get car fixed, etc. However, it really should all go through your insurance company. Do you have legal cover included?

Rainbowinthesky · 21/02/2013 10:42

Policy is in dh's name so can't phone them. No idea if he got legal cover with policy but we do have it through other car and house insurance. Her door was damaged but not badly which would affect driving the car in anyway. I am wondering if insurance doesn't count as it was off road. Would have thought cheaper to get new door rather than paying solicitors.

Just googled company and they are no win no fee but deal with personal injury through accidents. No one was in the car.

your insurers will probably say that they wish any correspondence to be forwarded to them, unanswered.

They don't want you making any damaging admissions.

When you say DH gave his details, you presumably mean, including your Insurance Co and Policy numnber?

greenfolder · 21/02/2013 12:06

Don't answer, just forward to your insurers with a note emphasising that no one was in the car. They may have uninsured losses like car hire or lost wages.

Thanks. Yes, dh gave insurance details and seeing as we have letter I assume our address. Will tell him to send to our insurers.

Do be careful. My DH had a very minor prang (DD was asleep in her car seat and did not even wake up) and his insurers then received a letter from an ambulance-chasing firm claiming for significant personal injury to the other driver. We think we've seen it off (the other driver was in a work vehicle and it seems his employer has not backed up the driver's claims re damage to vehicle and injury to him) but I think there are people out there perfectly happy to make grossly inflated claims.

Rainbowinthesky · 21/02/2013 14:13

Dh took a photo if damage at the time. Thank god for insurance.
