does anyone have experience of how to gather evidence of conscious suffering and sue the nhs for the distress caused by it

You'll have to give us a few more details because what you mean by conscious suffering

suffering while semi conscious eg half sedated on a ventilator

If being put a ventilator was a necessary part of any treatment you were receiving whilst in hospital I would have thought that if it is unlikely you can sue the NHS for any distress caused by it . Had you been able to alert any nurses to the discomfort you were experiencing?

could have recognised that my father was in pain and provided pain relief

Ah, it's your father you are talking about . Sorry to ask this, but is he alive or did he die ? If the latter, does he want to sue the NHS or do you want to do it or do it on his behalf and again, what did they actually do wrong ?
