Renting out a house - can we charge the ex tenant for this?

Tenant just moved out and new one already in. It seems the old tenant left the house in an average state of repair (not really cleaned it and some things need replacing etc which are more than wear and tear but nothing too awful) but the washing machine door has come off and was left on the other side of the kitchen to the washing machine.

We aren't sure if it broke off accidentally due to wear and tear or if ex tenant or her children pulled it off from riotous play, or whatever. Ex tenant didn't tell us it had broken so we have no idea if it's been this way for long or not (if it had broken off from wear and tear obviously we would have bought a new one for the house). She also didn't tell us it was broken and just left it for us to find.

We have now ordered a new washing machine for said house but are unsure as to whether to charge some, or all of the cost of the washing machine from the tenants deposit or not since we don't know whether it just fell off or if it was their fault it came off. I would be fine about it but I just find it odd she didn't say anything about the fact it had broken and just left it like that. It was also really nasty and mouldy inside, but I guess that's by the by.

Would is the norm in this situation? We want to be reasonable re: giving her deposit back but we also don't want to pay for something that may have been her fault.

reading that back I fear I look a bit money grabbing and unreasonable, I'm not, honestly! I'd just appreciate some perspective/knowledge on what the norm is as I have no idea.

It sounds like your new tenant had already moved when the washing machine door came to light, is that right?

We have an inventory but estate agents haven't yet sent us updated one from when old tenant moved out. Yes, new tenant is in already. The machine in fairness was pretty old, not sure how but probably could potentially be argued that it was past it's best (although seemed to be working fine except for door come off last thing we knew). Maybe we could charge a tiny amount for the new machine Hmm
