Living in a previously repossessed house, getting threatening letters, what to do?

We have lived here a year now and we are still getting letters for the previous owner saying that they are going to send in the bailiffs, we normally send the letters back up opened but this. One was threatening even from the envelope!
Can we have the letters sent away before they get to us or are we allowed to phone the company to say they don't live here?
I have a disabled child I don't needs bailiffs turning up at my door!

but it didnt seem to work for me.

just return to sender.

I'm having that problem, at one point I was receiving 16 letters from the same company. I sent every single one back every time, The last lot I got, I wrote on the envelope 'When are you going to take notice that they no longer live here'

I'm still getting letters for them now, I've been here nearly a year. When a bailiff turned up at my door I told him they'd moved and showed him my driving licence, haven't seen that lot since.

We put the threatening companies in touch with the agency we bought from, that seemed to help.

some of them have a number you can call if you open the envelope. to say you not the person they looking for etc. i had a few when i moved. after calling a few times they stoppped.

otherwise follow advice above.

Rather than just returning to sender, in a similar situation, we sent returned the letters to the sender in another envelope, with a covering letter saying that the previous residents had moved out, and we had been resident in the property since XX date. This stopped most things but not the crappy catalogues

yes we bought the house over a year ago, DH phoned the finance company who basically called him a lier and he really was the person the letter was addressed to and they will be continuing to send us letters!
Can they check the land registry I can phone them and tell them to do that.

This happened to me too when I first moved into my house 8 years ago.

The previous tenants owed money to everyone!

I opened every letter and contacted the agency involved every time. Several times it appeared that the baillifs were imminent but nothing ever happened and after around 18 months the letters stopped.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 24/07/2012 21:51

I've had this before. I opened the letter and called the number and told them the offending bastard party had moved out. The electoral role stated that I was the only person living in the house, and they did actually fuck off after that phone call.

IMO they continue to hassle ANY address that might pay out, whether that be because the person with the debt actually lives there, or because people are shit scared of bailiffs and will pay out to get peace of mind.

If you are on the electoral role at your new place there is fuck all they can do.

if you look at the documents your solicitor sent you when you bought the house, you will see a document called "office copy entries" - this is the covenants and plan of the property. It also lists the names of the owners (you) and the date you bought it. Get a couple of copies and send those to the bailiff/other companies. They will then leave you alone.
