Is grabbing someone by the throat "common assault"?

No injury or mark.
No real risk.
No intention to press charges, just want to know.

Thanks.

I thought assault as there was no injury.
But I only heard about rather than witnessed it.
Thanks

Yes - likely to be charged (if at all) as common assault. Could also be one of the minor public order offences, depending on circumstances.

Thank you everyone. It wasn't me (victim or perpetrator).
I wasn't there so can't judge the actual event.
Yes, it is most certainly a red flag and one I will not ignore - I will be watching like a hawk for anything else. If there is anything else trust me, this will be revisited.

For now perpetrator has apologised to victim and is aware that it was completely and utterly unacceptable.
Victim is ok about it (so clearly there was no hurt) and this is my main concern. I am not protecting the perpetrator, nor do I have any reason to.

I honestly do not believe there is any real risk and there is no evidence of any prior incidents. Key for me is that the perpetrator admitted it freely to me with no prompting so is not trying to hide it and they meekly accepted it when i verbally castigated them.

Difficult situation as I don't want to give too much detail - hence the name change.

Again, thank you.

I think it was just (!) a hold of the throat/neck rather than any actual choking. Had it been otherwise we would not be having this conversation!

Apologies if i don't return to the thread - worried about stuffing up the name change.

My 12 year old grandson has just been grabbed round the throat by his father, he fought him off and ran out the house. It’s Assault surely so should his mum call the police ? Or will it be classed as time wasting ?
