Changing spelling of name - officially

For as long as I can remember I've used a particular spelling of my middle name - it's even on my passport. However, recently I had to request a copy of my birth cert and received one with another spelling, and a note from the registrar pointing out the discrepancy.

What is the cheapest way of officially changing the spelling?

Probably deed poll.

A change of name deed. I normally charge about £50 plus VAt to do them but frankly they take about 5 mins and if you pm me I'll send you the precedent for free (I'm leaving the firm and am de-mob crazy!)

mumblechum1 · 11/06/2012 12:59

Have PM'd you with the precedent Smile

Which name do you want to change? If you're happy with the spelling on your passport you need take no action. If you want to revert to the spelling on your BC then you need to do the C of N deed.

If your passport and bank accounts are in your preferred name then there is no problem - that is now your name.

Thank you for your replies, mumblechum and Collaborate.

I'm happy with the spelling on my passport. Could I just use that for ID (don't have a driving licence) and keep schtum about the birth cert? Or are there any circumstances where I might have to present the birth cert and questions might be asked? Will it cause my family any problems with registering my death when I shuffle off this mortal coil, hopefully a good few decades from now?

If necessary, I will take advantage of mumblechum's very generous offer.

i think you can do a 'Statutory Declaration' my husband did that to change his surname before we got married, long story.. it was about £20 11yrs ago.. doesnt have to be a lot.
