Where do I stand with water coming from neighbours that is NOT rain water?

I have a neighbour who likes to keep their patio clean with a jet wash. The problem is that our street has a slight slope and my house is on the down side to theirs so when they do make their patio lovely and clean, I get all their mucky water. It gathers outside my backdoor and I am sure that it is causing damp in that corner of the house. I have pointed out to them what happens but their reply is 'What can we do? It's not our fault that you have poor drainage on your side!'

I know this only happens a few times a year but they also have a tendancy to just open the tap on their rain barrel and just let the water run which also runs to the same place outside my back door. I have suggested that they put a hose on their barrel and let the water run onto their grass but as yet, they haven't done it. Can anyone help with where I could go from here as talking to them doesn't seem to be working.

Thanks

You could possibly try the Environmental Health Officers at your local council, I used to sit next to a few and they occasionally dealt with drainage problems/disputes. A quick call from them might be enough.

Do you get the same problem with heavy rain?

do you not have a hose pipe ban? I thought most areas did at the moment. that would solve the problem, report them and let them get a 1k fine Wink

Thanks deepfriedcupcake, I have done just that. Hopefully we can get this sorted.

Rain does tend to collect but only if it is a really heavy downpour.

MOSagain, we don't have a hosepipe ban here...yet. Don't worry, if they persist, I will have no hesitation in reporting them, Wink

not legal but practical...

to help me understand this.

The water from their patio runs onto your property. Does it run direct from their patio onto your patio, or is there garden or something in between? Is there a flowerbed, fence or wall?

Patios are supposed to be laid with fall so that any water runs away from the house. Does theirs, and does yours?
