Hypothetical (probably) question re discounts/refunds

I just wanted to check if anyone might know the answer to this situation.

I went to a shop today to buy two wall lights. The shop did not have them in stock except for the display light so the assistant offered to order me two new lights. When she checked the warehouse stock, she found that there was only one showing in stock which probably meant they were discontinuing the line. She suggested I might like to purchase the display light. I said that would probably be fine but were they going to offer an ex-display discount (don't ask don't get Smile ). Anyway, she wasn't entirely sure but said she would leave a message for a manager with regard to this and the answer would be available when I went to pick up the ordered light. With me so far?

Now, before this conversation I had asked what their returns policy was as I really needed to get the light(s) home to doubly make sure they would go with my existing ceiling lights and wanted to check I would be okay to bring them back for a refund if they were wrong.

When the assistant remembered my question re returns policy, she said that IF the store offered me an ex-display discount, I would not be able to return the light (at all). I said that surely if, for example, I'd found the light to actually not work they'd have to refund. She still seemed to think that basically all my consumer rights would be waived in the event of a discount - she was very young and admitted she probably didn't know what she was talking about!

I'm hoping that the store will offer me an ex-display discount, the lights both work and they look marvellous! However, if that isn't the case, will I have any come-back?

They could refuse to refund you because you don't like them/feel they are not suitable. Returns on that basis are a goodwill gesture but not required by law.

They would still have to refund you if they were faulty - not fit for purpose. Info about consumer rights here
