Oh god, I think I may need help...
I deal with a broker - had to claim on insurance for leak and needed new flooring, received letter from 3rd party insurnace company who stated that I did not advise them of previous claim, but I made the initial call to report previous claim to my broker who dealt with it all. Thus thinking all ok. Now trying to re-new the broker tells me that the insurnace company I previous used would not re-new - does this mean I have been refused?
I then went online, went all through the details then called the compnay and spoke to someone direct. Told them all the problem. They asked very specific question " have you ever been refused or had policy cancelled" No I said - but have I? The new insurance company has all my old claims information and has agreed to insure me. I have paid for 1 years policy and am just waiting for the paperwork. I am really worried now. Have I broken the law?

I'm not really clear about the circumstances you state. But basically if an insurance company has told you, or told your broker with regard to you that they refuse to insure you, then yes, you have misinformed your new insurance company of that refusal, making it possible for the new insurer to invalidate any claim you made. Therefore your policy is worthless.

If this is the case, sorry its a bit hazy in your explanation, you must inform them immediately so they can amend their records. Make sure you get it all in writing....I have a total distrust of insurance companies but thats a long story!

I'll try to explain.... on renewal my broker called me to give me a deal. Good deal as it happens so I asked him what details/claims he had down for me. He did not have the last 2 claims of 2010 & 2011 both separate claims for contents & buidings. I asked how this could happen when I only dealt with the broker and not the insurnace company when the claims happened.

So on reflection he re-negotiates the deals based on the now correct information, he comes back and says that only 1 company will insure me now as I had 2 claims and only at an extortionate rate. I told him to get a better deal and in the meantime I called another company, gave them all information of previuos claims and they agreed to quote me. So I paid and am just waiting for the paperwork. I am just worried now that I may have been refused insurance per se without actually knowing it. My new company has all claims rquired for the years specified so not too sure they could invalidate any new claims (which I hope will never happen)

The fact that they (new company) have insured you with full knowledge of the 2 previous claims seems to say they would not invalidate your future claims. I would still contact them and discuss this 'refusal' with them just to set the record straight. I really don't trust insurance companies so it may just be me!

I personally found an insurance (car) broker an unecessary expense and only use them for mortgages. I dont think you would have problems though, seems very straightforward if you are honest, as technically you were refused.

If you need to claim they will find out and your claim will be denied. It was a straightforward question and giving the answer you did was not unintentional.

OP didnt intend to be untruthful lisaro, more like caught on the hop and not sure of the ins and outs of what was said to the broker in the first instance. The fact that she is now questioning herself shows she wants to put the record straight, after all she was refused on the basis of 2 recent claims, but the new contract has taken these into account and still granted the cover. She just needs to contact them to set the record straight.
