Who should I get to write my will?

DP and I have two children and a house together, and as we aren't married I know it would be sensible to get our wills written.

I've heard that will writing kits, the sort you get in WHSmith etc., aren't worth the paper they are written on, so I want to get it done properly, but do I need to spend hundreds of pounds with a solicitor? Our situation is fairly straightforward and mirror wills would probably be sufficient.

Halifax has an offer on for £85 for a pair of mirror wills. Is that a good deal? Or can anyone recommend what I should do instead?

Thankyou!! Smile

NO, NO, NO, NO, DON'T try to do it yourself, so many people have tried cutting corners and found to their detriment years down the line that the wills were not valid or did not have the intention they thought.

Simple answer, I'd recommend our resident MN wills expert, Mumblechum. She has an advert on here in small businesses (will look for it and post link) and I'd highly recommend her. She knows her stuff and when I get off my arse I will be instructing her to draft my new will.

sorry, meant to say, 85 sounds rather cheap. No idea what Mumblechum charges but what price do you put on peace of mind knowing it is drafted properly?

YYY to Mumblechum. Very easy, very quick and very reasonably priced. Can't recommend her enough. She did mine last year and I'm a very happy bunnyGrin

YYY to Mumblechum. She's fab!

Ooh my ears are burning!

Thanks for the plugs, MOS, spongefingers and HerMaj, very kind of you Thanks

OP, it's always a good idea to make a will, especially if you're not married, so do feel free to drop me an email through the website on my advert, or PM me.

Standard charge is £85 for a single, £140 for a couple. I appreciate that banks sometimes advertise lower rates, but the catch is that they'll often ramp the price up for things which I'd include, and/or get you to appoint them as executors which can make a big hole in your estate (they normally charge a percentage).

Thanks mumblechum, I'll talk to DP about it and show him your website.

What happens when the will is written? Where is it stored and what are the storage charges? And is it expensive to make any changes in the future should we need to? Smile
