I have walked out of the marital home because of domestic violence. I pay all the household bills and half the mortgae currently. Can I just stop paying the bills as I am not there? I understand I have to continue to pay the mortgage until we can sort out what to do with the house but what about everything else? Do I have any responsibilities? I don't know where to start!

Congratulations! You are amazing and honestly I am so happy for you! I wish the best for you!
Unfortunately I have no idea what to say about the legal issues? I just wanted you to know I am happy that you got out!

Have you seen a solicitor? Safety comes first of course, but it might not be in your interests to leave the marital home. A solicitor can advise you where you stand and what options there are.

Thank you jsinthehouse. I don't feel amazing right now, I feel sad and scared and totally confused but I do also feel a little proud of myself. STIDW, I don't even know where to start, am skint and afraid I won't be able to afford a solicitor. I can't be there though. I do know that!

Thing is, OP, you may well be entitled to public funding (legal aid) to get an occupation order and non molestation injunction. What that means is an order that he gets out of the house so you and your children can stay there. It isn't permanent, but usually for at least 6 months, and if he breaches the order he risks going to prison.

Go to www.resolution.org to find a local family specialist. Before making an appointment, check whether you're entitled to legal aid by looking on the Legal Services Commission website Eligibility Calculator.

If you're eligible, make sure you make your appt with a public funding lawyer.

Alternatively, go to the Women's Aid website. They have people who will help you get an injunction for free.
