Rental contract - Is this normal?

We have been in our current property for over a year and are due to sign another contract for a year.
The contract we have been given to sign again says that there is a minimum eight month (six + 2 months notice) stay. Surely if we have been here this long - landlord/tenant all happy with arrangement - it should just be 2 month notice period??
DH seems to think so and wants the contract changed.

You don't need to sign a new tenancy agreement. The old one continues as a periodic tenancy. Just google it. There are a load of websites about these and assured shorthold tenancies.

Ooh very interesting, I've always signed a new contract. Maybe this is just a way for agencies to make money for drawing up a new agreement?
Thanks, I'll google a bit later.

It's just a way of drawing you into a commitment for a set number of months again. If it's a periodic tenancy you can give a months notice at any time.
