Missing building regulations certificate

I wonder if anyone could advise me please? We bought our house in 2004 which had a dormer put into the attic. I have a copy of the planning application which was passed, but for the lfe of me, can't find the regs certificate signing it all off.
My 2 questions are - is it something that should have been sent to us?
If it transpires that one hasn't been issued would we have a cse against the solicitors we used for conveyancing? It is documented in the owners property inofmatin form that certificates were to follow. Surely the onus was on our solicitor to ensure he had them before completing the purchase?

Many thanks for any help - am getting my knickers in a right old twist!

Yes you should have had a copy and solicitor should have checked you did before exchange. However you could still get an indemnity policy against enforcement now if needs be, or maybe you were issued with one if it was missing at the time instead.

Just had problems with a builder over one for our garage conversion. Ask the LA if they have a copy. If one's been issued it will have been lodged with them. Perhaps any conveyancing bods could say whether it would have been disclosed on the LA search.
I think as well after so many years the LA can do nothing about it, but your solicitor should have sorted it out. Ask them if it's on the file.

but if you officially enquire and there are none you cannot then get a policy. How long ago was it ? Our council has planning stuff back before 2000-ish online

Don't panic!

I am a BCO. You can get a copy of your certificate from your local authority.

Ime, some solicitors insist on having the certs for conveyancing process and some don't.
