hi any advice on registering my 6 week old daughter as a British citizen. I am British, my partner is non British but from an EU country. The government web site dosent help a great deal. We have registered the birth already. Really appreciate and thoughts on this

Not sure you need to. If you are British and the child was born here, just apply for a passport.

larastaxi · 25/02/2011 16:47

Thanks for reply. I am the child's father (I should have said that sorry). We were told that the child takes the mother's nationality and that we therefore need to apply for British citizenship for the child.

Who told you that?

www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/britishcitizenship/othernationality/Britishcitizenship/borninukorqualifyingterritory/

This tells you your child is a British citizen.

That's what I thought too - as my SIL and her DH were both Zimbabwean Citizens - but legally residing in the UK when their DD's were born - and both DD's are British.

I understood that if one parent is british and teh child was born in Britain then its british ..... The child is entitled to both nationities and in the future both passports if you want esp as in the EU.
I am british married to an Eu national and my dds have both passports right now. ( Born overseas however) WHen they come to 18 they have to decide where they want to vote etc ...

chibi · 25/02/2011 17:01

you absolutely don't need to

i was not a british citizen at the time of my dd's birth, though her father is british

she is british, and i obtained a passport for her when she was only a few moths old!

you might only need to register if your child were born overseas - i have had to do this with my two dc so that they have official confirmation of their other nationality (my native one) in addition to their status as Brits

larastaxi · 25/02/2011 17:02

well that is a relief. Thank you. To answer your question the registrar of births at Wandsworth council advised us that we need to apply. Thanks again

She has a British birth certificate, a British father and was born on UK soil. If she was any more British we'd have to spread marmalade on her! Wonder what's up with the registrar??

MrsSchadenfreude · 25/02/2011 21:34

Until a few years ago, if the father was British, but the mother not, and the parents weren't married, I don't think the baby could be British unless it would otherwise have been stateless. So perhaps that's what the registrar was thinking of.

gillybean2 · 26/02/2011 20:00

larastaxi is there any reason your British citizenship may be 'complicated'? eg where you not born in Britain and you or your parents had to apply to register you for British citizenship?

Just trying to think why the registrar might have thought there were complications...
