residence order - would like some practical advise

I have a residence order for my 4 year old DD.

What exactly does it mean, apart from she lives with me etc...

If X DP takes her to a place during contact that isnt where I think (we agree venue for contact and he stays there with her) do I have any power, rights to object to this?

Not unless the order gives you that right, which would be unusual.

Agree with Resolution. In general you have no right to control where your ex takes your daughter whilst she is in his care. Equally he has no right to control where you take her whilst she is in your care.

Having a residence order simply means that your daughter normally lives with you. It also gives you parental responsibility but as the mother you had that anyway. It does not give you any other rights unless it specifically says so.

Would mediation be of more help to move the situation forward, rather than possibly thinking about legal 'powers'?

Agree with the others. Generally residence orders specify time & duration.

So he can pretty much do what he likes within reason during that time. Just like you can do what you like during yours.
