How can I prove to authorities that we have separated?
Can Ido it without going t osolicitors to obtain letter from them?

So teally - looking after DIY way to do it, as prefer not to spend money

Your problem is having the authorities accept you've separated if it means you get some financial advantage. Sometimes they'll take the issuing of divorce proceedings as evidence, but that'll involve cost to you. Don't see how you can prove it without taking steps to formalise the separation to be honest.

I just called the CTC people up and told them, they didn't ask for any evidence. They did phone up ex-p and ask him for a date of separation though, checking that our two dates tallied.

That was 3 yrs ago, and we're both still here as house hasn't sold.

For the purposes of a future divorce on 2 years separation you will need to be able to satisfy the Court that you have lived separate and apart. For example, you should not do any cleaning, washing, ironing or cooking for each other. This gets a bit difficult when there are children involved as of course you will want to sometimes sit down as a family and have meals together for the sake of the children. You will also need to set out details of your living arrangments so should be sleeping in separate rooms etc.
