i want to make a small alternation to my will - i will leave a ring to my SIL (soon to be ex) and i want to cancel this. what do I do - I don't really want to go back to the solicitor who originally wrote it.

thanks for any replies

You can make a codicil, which amends but does not replace a will. I think you'd need to speak to a solicitor though.

resolution - it says something like x ring to my SIL and her name. once she is no longer my SIL will that be void? I couldn't just cross it out and sign it or add a sheet and say this and sign it and get a couple of other people to as well?

its not a massively valuable ring - but i don't want to give her anthing on principle or invalidate my will

That won't work. On the basis of that wording he'll still get the ring. A codicil won't cost as much as the will.

One other thing you can do is gift the ring now. Put a letter with your will, dated, to confirm the gift, and physically hand the ring over. That way it won't form part of your estate. Otherwise you must make a codicil.

thanks resolution. don't want her to have the ring at all - she's a lazy, 2 timing bXXch.

Or...light is now dawning... are you saying i should gift it to someone else, say one of my children or my husband?

That's right. Although you'd have to have some evidence that you actually made the gift, and there's no substitute for actually handing the ring over. A letter evidencing the gift and kept next to your will might do. I'm not a probate specialist though, so you may be better off speaking to one of them.

thanks resolution. if it was a very valuable ring i would go to a specialist - but its not so i will follow your advice as its sounds sensible.
