Can my employer down grade my role/pay me less if I request to work from home?

Hi, I am currently on maternity leave and expressed an interest to my employer of working a proportion of my job from home when I return. I am employed as an administrator and part of that role is data entry, something which can easily be completed from home as it is entered onto a web based program. My job is graded currently as 6, however my manager has said I can complete the data entry from home as a grade 5. I checked my job description and data entry is detailed as one of the key tasks for my job. What concerns me is that I am in a permenant contract and I can return under same conditions, which will see me doing the data entry as a grade 6. I feel completely stuck as I do want to be able to work from home, but don't want to suffer financially as a result. Is what she is suggesting legal? Having 2 young children and currently on reduced pay as on maternity I cannot afford a solicitor! Any help/advice/pointers very much appreciated and thanks in advance!

Under the right to apply for flexible working your employer is obliged to consider your application and can only reject it if there are good business reasons. I suspect that agreeing to your request but only on reduced pay is not legal and you should consult ACAS for advice to confirm this.
