Giving notice with no contract?

I work as a teaching assistant, but as the future of the child I work with was uncertain, I have never been contracted and claim my pay as a casual employee.

I want to move away and need to give notice, can anyone tell me where I stand without a contract? I orignally thought I would work until christmas and start somewhere new in the new year, but there are a couple of jobs I really want to apply for which start sooner. I really need to know where I stand if I want to leave before they want me to.

TIA

No contract = no notice surely?

In the absence of a contract you have to give one week's notice if you are an employee. However, if you are an independent contractor or freelance agent there is no requirement to give notice.

Thanks, in that case I think Im going to not say anything at all for the minute, and wait until I'm a bit further along the job application path before making things awkward a work.
