Are parking tickets from supermarkets enforcable ?

The reason I ask is that DD's friend had undone her seat belt or not done it up properly as we were pulling out of the supermarket car park.
Now I was scarred having somebody else's unrestrained child in the car and so quickly pulled into the first space I could to turn around and buckle her up.
Well you guessed it, it was a disabled space.
We've received a parking ticket for £170 and a CCTV photo of me in the space.
I said to DH to ignore it because I don't believe the debt is enforceable and if they take me to court it'll get laughed out. DH is getting nervous because they now want £250 or else they are threatening court.
The original fine was £35 which they claim to have put on the windscreen but they simply couldn't have because the engine didn't even stop I was that quick.
What do you think ?

Like ghoulishglenda, I have seen lots of posts on moneysavingexpert.com and there seems to be a whole area in the forums devoted to this, with many tips and sample letters. YOur qustion should be answered there and you would not even have to psot!

Good luck......

If you get any more letters from them, I suggest you return them unopened marked "Return to sender"

I was about to post along the same lines and AuntAda as there has been quite a lot of questions in the motoring section of the paper mentioned. If you feel that you have to contact them they do suggest that you send the letter recorded delivery and also add that if this is not deemed adequate compensation for your minor breach of contract you will see them in court. Ask them also to advise you the date and location of the hearing they will then drop the case. The latest case which was regards to a supermarket they suggest sending them only £5.

Dh whos very interested in all this type of thing reckons its a common thing and that you need to write to them by recorded delivery and say you are employing a solicitor and as they have cctv footage you are willing to go to court as the cctv will prove what happened.

He reckons theyll curl up and die.

People should boycott those supermarkets that collude with these companies.

VivaLeBeaver · 31/10/2010 18:34

My brother has had similar though not a supermarket carpark, it was a shopping centre carpark and he wa sent a fine for been over the line of the space he was in.

He says they're unenforceable but he says you can't just ignore the letters. You need to reply to them saying that you are disputing what they're saying and refusing to pay the fine. The company that were chasing him have agreed to give up now.
