Hello everyone, I realise it's Saturday, and not a good day to post for advice, but does anyone have any idea how to deal with this?

I was given two Habitat Gift Vouchers a while back. I went to Tottenham Court Road Habitat and purchased a Cleo bookcase.

I paid for it with one of the cards. The sales assistant placed all the remaining money on the one card. I was given a receipt. They were supposed to 'phone me to collect the book-case when it was in stock.

That was in August.

I waited ....

About two weeks ago my ds (12) announced he'd answered a call from Habitat saying the bookcase was available to collect.

"When did you get that call, sweetie?"

"Don't remember."

So, I went in to collect the bookcase.

Apparently, my order no longer exists. Apparently, it was cancelled the next day. Apparently, my receipt is worthless.

Really.

The money is not on my card. I have no bookcase. My order is ... what, exactly? It is, it would appear, a figment of my imagination.

Since then I've 'phoned the store - lots. Nobody cares. They repeat the line: "Your order was cancelled the next day." And then, nothing.

I've 'phoned Head Office. One day, maybe, the Area Manager will 'phone me back. Quite possibly to tell me that my order was cancelled the next day.

Progress, such as it is, effected by constant mithering on my part, has led to a promise from the Tottenham Court Road store, to check in the stock room, to see if there is a bookcase being held in there with my name on it.

That might be done "Some time in the next few weeks".

That is, apparently, going to be the only proof that my order is still "live".

As you can imagine, I'm biting my nails. I wonder if it's in there?

The thing is ... they have my money. So, cancelled or not, they took, and kept the money. they still have it. I have a receipt that is, apparently, not worth the paper it's printed on.

Every time I 'phone, I'm treated like a criminal, who is, clearly, trying to cozen Habitat out of a precious Cleo bookcase.

I'm not. I've paid for the damn thing. I, stupidly, thought that the receipt proved that (it doesn't, their computer system has priority, and the order was "cancelled".)

If it was cancelled, why didn't I get my money back?

Habitat don't have a customer relations department, apparently. And they appear to have a culture of really, really not caring. They also have my (Christmas present) money.

I am sad. Am I going to have to take them to court? For a sodding book-case? How do I do that????

Please, if anyone knows, please tell me. To be honest, I'd like replies, just to prove I exist. The weirdness of the whole thing is making me doubt my own reality, never mind that of the "missing order".

By the way, just to be clear, the Gift Voucher things are basically In-store cards, with money already on them. So a sort of Gift Debit Card.

god i don;t know.

they must have a formal complaints policy, i think this should be put in writing, threatening legal action, small claims court or something, maybe if a bod in a suit int he legal department gets to see it something might be done?

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 30/10/2010 12:15

Who said that? Wink

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 30/10/2010 12:15

Write to the CEO of Habitat direct. Explain the whole story. Threaten Small Claims Court.

According to Wikipedia, his name is Christian Rojkjaer, and their address is

animula · 30/10/2010 12:19

Custardo, thank you.

Whatfreshhellisthis, ho ho!

Seriously, I have a seriously "Alice in Wonderland" moment after calling them!!

Custardo, they have "devolved" their complaints, but you're right, I think it's time to get formal/legal.

Does anyone know anything about Small Claims? Or is this a case of spending long hours in CAB (but bless them for being there when you need them.).

And if you don't get anywhere, Tweet about it with #habitat - they definitely tweet

animula · 30/10/2010 12:22

Ooh! Missed recent posts MsHell. Thank you.

Yes. You're right. It is time to get out the pen. Thank you. I have to say, I did google, and was a little deterred by their labyrynthine structure.

And, to be honest, I felt ... sort of ... rude/impolite.

Do you people really think it's time to do this? Or am I being a bit .... something or other?

OP posts:
animula · 30/10/2010 12:24

Actually, whatfreshhell, you are the google queen - I couldn't find that!!

Sugarlake - you'll notice on that link that it tells you to go back to the store you made your purchase in ...

They don't do customer service at Habitat. Seriously. It's not good.

OP posts:
franke · 30/10/2010 12:24

I don't think it's too soon. They have been completely uncooperative. Sounds like trying to engage them any further at store level will be a complete waste of time.

lborolass · 30/10/2010 12:25

Do you live near enough to the store to go and camp out there until they sort it out?

Ask them for a copy of the refund voucher if there are so sure the order was cancelled.

Don't give up - I hate bad service like this.

HeadlessLadyBiscuit · 30/10/2010 12:27

You have tried every other method and got nowhere so I think it's time to pull out the big guns

animula · 30/10/2010 12:27

OK. I see an afternoon of Being Irate. On paper, at least.

I'm still impressed at those google skills!!

Dispiritingly, I only managed to find references to a website called "Habitat are shit", and lots (and lots and lots) of moaning about the effects of their decision to sack"devolve" customer services.

Which was a bit demoralising.

And thanks for listening. You are all lovely to have answered.

tribpot · 30/10/2010 12:28

What's rude? You ordered something. You paid for it. It arrived and they phoned you to say you could come and collect. Let's say they waited a reasonable amount of time before cancelling the order, then cancelled it. You haven't received the goods, they should therefore refund you, minus - perhaps - a fee for having ordered something you didn't collect.

They must have a policy on orders. They owe you either the money or the bookcase, it's simple.

lborolass · 30/10/2010 12:29

Oh, and on the question of being too soon you have got to be kidding - you ordered a bookcase in August, its November in two days time.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 30/10/2010 12:32

Get irate on their ass Grin

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 30/10/2010 12:32

And remember to update us!

animula · 30/10/2010 12:33

tribpot it's actually weirder than that. Their records show they cancelled it the day after I bought it.

It's not even been done because I was a dilatory customer.

Ds reckons they 'phoned about two/three weeks ago.

But I must not dwell. That would be very Victorian, and melancholic. Instead, I must get busy. And channel my outrage. As opposed to my confusion and despair.

Forwards!!!

OP posts:
animula · 30/10/2010 12:35

whatfreshhellisthis Definitely wrt update.

OK, I'm off to get busy. And yes, I will tell you how it goes.

OP posts:
tribpot · 30/10/2010 12:46

animula, very odd but that means you should have been refunded the day after you ordered as well! They have 135 quid of your money, assuming you ordered before the bookcase was discounted :)

Odd they phoned you to say the order was in after they'd cancelled said order. Clearly a computer glitch but unless they can prove you have either the dosh or the bookcase, their problem to resolve.

animula · 06/11/2010 21:44

Hello! I promised an up-date, and her I am - with my bookcase!!

Hurray!

But ... I'm really not terribly impressed.

I spent a while waiting to see if anyone would get back to me. And they didn't. No-one. So I went back (again!) to the shop, and this time found a manager, who promised to look into it.

And she did! And she 'phoned me and promised me they now had my bookcase!

And so I went in to collect it today. And it wasn't there. Oh dear. And nor was the manager. Oh dear. But fortunately, the young woman sales assistant took pity on me, and found me a bookcase. And off I went with it.

I paid for the delivery home. I didn't get an apology. I wasted a lot of my time. And it seems that whether you get your (paid-for) goods in Habitat depends, completely and utterly, on the individual goodness of whoever you happen to bump into in the store.

So, Greta and Cheryl - thank you. You are stars.

Habitat - no. Generally, you are pants.

And a friend who worked in retail pointed out that this almost certainly happened to me because someone cancelled my order and then removed the money from the till, assuming that the order would be processed as normal, and no-one would be any the wiser. So you'd think someone at Habitat would be interested in this.

I really hope that's not true. But it was certainly a glitch, so surely of interest, not just for me.

Anyhow. I have my bookcase. And we have been brought together by two lovely workers. So I must not complain.

And thank you, muchly, for your advice. Which I had (begun to) put into practice. So, not wasted. thank you for taking the time to advise and sympathise. Smile

I still have money on the card, which is nice, but I'm not going to order anything again ... .

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 07/11/2010 17:57

Yay! for bookcase!

And BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! for Habitat.

And Yay! for Greta and Cheryl!

Really glad you got it in the end, even if they haven't exactly grovelled and apologised.

And yes, buy something you can take home straight away with the rest. They have some lovely fairy lights! Grin
