Employment law question - anyone about?

I hope someone can help a friend of mine at work. A few months ago she agreed to do some work that was at a higher grade than she was currently at. She was verbally told that she would be paid at the higher grade for the three months that she would be doing the work. She did not receive anything in writing confirming this, but did the work anyway. She has now been told that the higher grade pay was not agreed by the senior manager, and she will only receive a few hundred pounds extra. She was never told that there was a problem.
My questions are:

-is the company at fault for not confirming the original discussion in writing?

-is the company at fault for not advising her that the higher pay had not been signed off?

-she has a meeting tomorrow with her manager and his manager. Is she entitled to have someone supporting her during this meeting?

Thanks in advance to anyone reading and responding.

I dont know much about most of the points but I am sure that in any kind of meeting like this you are entitled to the support of another employee.
