Gap socks have PERMANENTLY SCARRED my 4 month old daughter... I want to write to them I AM SO LIVID

My daughter wore some GAP socks (3-6mths) when she was just 3 months.

She wore them for a day (8am - 6pm ish) and was left with a VERY swollen and red raised bleed behind the skin - not just your normal bruise, really quite heavy duty.

I have just seen the doctor as 6 weeks on it isn't going away to be told that the dark red stripe across thoe whole of the back of her calf is a scar and won't improve much.

I cried. I am so cross that I want to write to gap and feel like asking for compensationas my perfect little girl will always carry this scar across the back of her legs.

Does anyone have any bad experience with faulty clothing and the outcomes?

Or any advice as to what I should say to GAP?

Please help. Angry

I don't understand why the mark didn't go right round the leg - if I wear socks and then change into a skirt, then I have sock marks all round the leg rather than just the back.

People aren't getting at you - they're just confused as to how a pair of socks could feasibly cause permanent scarring.

Marchpane · 07/10/2010 16:31

If the brusing was only on the back of one leg is it possible something pressed on the leg on top of the sock? That would cause the bruise to be the same shape as the sock.

I find that suggestion much more likely than a faulty sock

Lynli · 07/10/2010 16:32

Please try not to worry, the scar will not grow with her.

I was scalded with boiling water, by my DB knocking over a kettle, when I was a year old and was scarred from the top of my leg to the knee.

I now have a tiny scar at the top of my leg and another at the knee.

I think your babies mark will fade away, and if not will be so small yuu will hardly notice.

Greensleeves · 07/10/2010 16:32

I agree that if it is a mark only on the back of one of her legs, then something else must have crushed her leg through the sock, causing the mark

did you have any difficulties with getting her in and out of things that day?

Bucharest · 07/10/2010 16:32

I don't think anyone is blaming you. It's just that we're not blaming a pair of socks either.

Sazisi · 07/10/2010 16:33

Are the top of the socks coated with rubbery stuff? I'm thinking contact allergy.. please do look into getting her tested.
I've put clothes on my kids which have been too tight, but it's never caused a reaction like you describe.

Putting vitamin e oil on the scar will help.

StealthPolarBear · 07/10/2010 16:33

your poor DD :(

Flighttattendant · 07/10/2010 16:33

Blimey, nobody is allowed to say the 'C' word without being thought to be a troll...!

If I truly suspected an item of clothing had injured my child, I would probably want some kind of compensation as well.

OP I hope you feel better away from the computer, good luck with this - you've done nothing wrong.

sweetkitty · 07/10/2010 16:36

Sorry you have found this newmomma

(newmomma is one my postnatal thread and I know she has had a hard time of it)

DS has gap socks, the white and blue sort of terry towelling type and they are quite tight fitting, he was in 6-12 month ones at 8 weeks as he is a chubster. They do leave a red sock mark IYSWIM I roll them down to his ankles but have never had any problems with them.

Gap socks were MN recommended and I have used them for DD3 and DS and they are brilliant for staying on.

BooBooGlass · 07/10/2010 16:37

Did I say troll? fwiw OP, if you have waited 6 weeks to get this seen to you don't have a leg to stand on anyway. ayb if you'd been seen sooner something could have been done. Interesting someone said about the toenails being a culprit- my ds used to do this all the time. Maybe her leg got caught in the zip of her snowsuit and you didn't notice? There's just no way this can have been the sock, and tbh even in the unlikely event that it was, Gap have done nothing wrong.

Flighttattendant · 07/10/2010 16:38

You didn't have to Booboo. It was the Hmm

LynetteScavo · 07/10/2010 16:39

Now I'm confused, is it on one leg or both?

I'm not doubting you, newmomma, it's just that I've never seen an injury/bleed like this, and am having trouble imagining it.

Kids heal amazingly, so I suspect the mark will fade with time.

BooBooGlass · 07/10/2010 16:40

You misunderstood the emoticon. No troll suspicions here. More questioning the motives tbh. SHe waited 6 weeks to get the injury seen, but has suddenly become so infuriated at Gap that she is going to write a letter to seek compensation.

missteresa · 07/10/2010 16:41

For what it's worth..

my daughter has experienced petichial (the under skin, love bite looking bruises)bruising from a t-shirt that had elasticated sleeves. it wasn't tight, not did she complain (she is 3).
it's entirely possible that baby didn't feel any discomfort, and that they looked perfectly fine.
it lasted a few weeks, but has cleared now. hope that helps? :)

Fair enough bright light. I just can't imagine writing for compensation to be a more pressing matter than getting medical attention for what OP describes as a 'heavy duty' injury Confused

MadreInglese · 07/10/2010 16:46

Your story sounds very familiar newmomma, did you post on here about it at the time?

LIZS · 07/10/2010 16:47

There are other things that could cause a large bruise and mark? Could she have been bashing her leg against something solid ie. the bar fo a bouncy chair when crying or got a toy wedged udner her leg ? dd had a condition called Erythema Nodosum which created a solid feeling bruise under the skin on her cheek. You are quick to cite the socks as the culprit (despite them not being tight etc) yet have ruled out every other possibility without seeing your gp until now. I really don't see who you can pursue this no matter how naturally upset you are. Only time will tell how quickly and much it fades.

TheRedSalamander · 07/10/2010 16:48

Wasn't there some press coverage a while ago saying that socks could cause permanent scarring if too tight- even if they didn't appear to be? Might be wrong.

MadreInglese · 07/10/2010 16:51

Deja vu

I'm positive I have heard this before but can't find any old threads

LynetteScavo · 07/10/2010 16:51

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 07/10/2010 16:57

Could she have banged her little leg on something on the sock line? This would leave a bruise and because the sock has a thick rib, it's left an impression, making the bruise worse?

PandaEis · 07/10/2010 17:03

newmomma was there any pulling to the elastic on the sock that has hurt your DD? the reason i ask is if the elastic has pulled in an odd way the material of the sock may have kind of bunched up to pinch your DDs skin on her leg. this can end up with a sort of blood pool under the skin that is deeper than a blood blister.
i know this as my brother had a pinch of skin from the waistband of his trousers as a boy and he had a small red/purple-ish mark on his side for a while but it has totally faded now.

i hope your DD is ok Smile

kveta · 07/10/2010 17:11

my DS had something similar with some Tesco socks, although not as severe as your experience sounds. The socks were just way too tight for a chubby baby's calf! the scarring has disappeared now he's 1 - it was on his leg for about 8 weeks or so when he was tiny. the socks went bin wards and we don't buy Tesco socks any more.

hope the mark fades soon.
