Renting again - landlord dragging his heals about repairs

Our Landlord is abroad and the property is managed via a letting agent, which I thought would mean that any problems would be resolved swiftly. In fact it takes longer as I have to report to the agents, who get in touch with landlord for approval (which is never given immediately) and it all becomes chinese whispers. We had a minor plumbing issue when we moved in 6 months ago that still hasn't been repaired.

Two weeks ago the electrics shorted in the kitchen and we couldn't get the fuse to go back so an electrician came out (much to our surprise) and indentified the problem being the dishwasher. Apparently the relevant part can't be found so the letting agents quoted for a new dishwasher which the Landlord is refusing to pay for. I don't know what we can do, I don't want to pay for a dishwasher partly on principal but also because it's integrated, so we could never take it with us. I would never have rented a house without a dishwasher, but he's saying it's a luxury. I vaguely remember our contract saying he had to repair any electrical goods, but what can we actually do to enforce it?

Check the contract and see what it says first. I don't rent my house out with white goods for precisely this reason.

A new integrated dishwasher won't be a fortune for him, so I would speak to the Letting Agent again and explain that this is potentially a big problem, and surely it is better to stump for a dishwasher than have a void if you leave and it doesn't get relet immediately.

You need to check the rental contract.
Sometimes white goods are provided with the proviso that if they break down they will not be repaired / replaced.
Also check the original advert / details - see if it lists the dishwasher as included.
Sometimes the agents are trying to be reasonable but can't spend landlords money without permission.
