My Nokia mobile is turning itself off. Not dropped in water. Not thrown. Just turning itself off.

On contract and less than a year old. Orange are saying I have to speak to manufacturer.

Thought goods were covered under a year by retailer?

Any advice?

If you bought it from Orange then your contract is with Orange who should take responsibility?

If there is a Nokia shop close to you I would just take the handset there and, as it is less than a year old, they will fix it for you.

Igglybuff · 06/08/2010 13:59

I thought it's orange's responsibility. They're probably trying to fob you off. Did you go into a shop or ring? I'd take it to an orange shop and get a replacement - speak to the manager if they dont play ball. They sold you the goods therefore they need to make sure it lasts!

ninedragons · 06/08/2010 14:01

Do you have Trading Standards there? I am in Australia and certainly here your contract is with the retailer.

I had this problem recently (not with a phone - with an ovulation kit, of all things). The chemist insisted I had to go to the manufacturer, I called Trading Standards from the shop, they said no, definitely the retailer's problem and you are entitled to a refund.

If you don't have Trading Standards, CAB might be able to point you in the right direction.

SagacityNell · 06/08/2010 14:01

It depends on the contract. The handset may not actually belong to Orange but Nokia.

We're on an 18 month contract from Orange. We got the handsets directly from them, and have no idea where the contract is!

I had this with my Blackberry a while ago. They said to speak to the manufacturer as it was out of warranty (just over a year old).

Blackberry are in the states and when I spoke to them they couldn't give a feck about my phone.

Pissed me off a lot as I had to go back to my old handset while my upgrade date came through. I reluctantly pay for insurance now so I don't have to worry about it when it breaks anymore. I hate having to do it though but I'm buggered without my phone.

This is quite usual for phone contracts ime. Any repairs I've had have been done by the manufacturer rather than the service provider. Nokia are actually pretty good in that they have instore service points (usually in branches of Carphone Warehouse) so you can drop them off rather than post them (which iirc is what you have to do with Sony Erickson)

ilovemydogandMrObama · 06/08/2010 15:37

Am hoping Orange will take pity on me as I followed their instructions and now the phone doesn't work at all! They suggested taking the battery out, cleaning the contact points, and now it won't even turn on.

Oh well.

YOu bought it from Orange, your contract is with them.

You return it to them and they deal with it.

Also worth noting is that you bully them when they fob you off, even if out of warranty.

THe handset is "not fit for purpose". It doesnt work as a phone and after such a short time it can reasonably be assumed that it should still work.

THey should at least repair it free of charge during the first year.

We recently pursued Dabs over a laptop we bought fourteen months ago. It stopped working and they said "tough". So we told them we were going to sue them as it was a £500 unit and therefore, reasonably, should still work after a year.

In the end they gave us £300 towards the cost of a new one.

Result.

Stick with going after Orange if you bought from them, or Carphone Warehouse if you bought via them.

I thought I had a problem with my Nokia.... (turns out I was being a bit dim.. but that's another story)

I also got mine direct from Orange, and they took it back about 6m after I initially got it.

You have had your phone less than a year, so you should be able to get Orange to take it back and replace it.

Ask to speak to Customer Services Manager, go through to the Sales Department first and explain to them what happened and ask them who you need to talk to within Orange to get the phone replaced.

OH, have you googled the Nokia switching itself off? there are often fora that are dedicated to overcoming phone glitches, and sometimes can offer help on fixing software issues. Otherwise if there is a known fault with your phone then you can use the information to help you get someone at Orange to take your complaint more seriously.

I had problems with my Ovi maps crashing, and finally found out how to fix it myself on a nokia forum.

Firstly I agree that you should get stroppy with Orange as I think it's their responsibility to mend your phone.

But if you can't get a result with them, check on the Nokia website to see if your phone is still under warranty (just submit your phone's IMEI, use google to find out how) and if it is under warranty you can send it to them freepost for repairs and they will send it back to you (hopefully mended!) via UPS and you don't pay a thing.

I did this with mine when a rather vital bit fell off and it couldn't have been easier.

Good luck!

I have had a nokia with o2 for nearly 18 months and it keeps breaking. They have sent it away from their shops to be fixed 3 times (didn't work) and I also found a nokia service centre who have tried to fix it twice (didn't work, but lasted longer than the other times)
o2 actually recommended the nokia service centre as they know the phones better, o2 have all the phone makes to fix iyswim.
The service centre didn't charge as it was within a 2 year warranty.

Try this:

1-Remove the battery.
2-Remove the chip.
3-Remove the micro card.
4-Wait 15 minutes.
5-Reinstall the chip, the battery and the micro card.
6-Turn on your phone.
7-Reset time and date.
8-You will receive emails from the server advising that your phone is already configured.
9-And that is all
10-Your phone is ready.

That was for an E71, but it might be worth a try...

Google your own specific phone and what it is doing, you will not be alone. Someone may have worked out how to fix the problem.
