Returning broken item to shop

Aaargh! Just spent £40.00 on a new hamster cage for my daughter's hamster and when we got the box home, discovered that there was a large crack on one of the plastic items inside. It is one of the main parts of the cage and means that it cannot be used.
I did notice when buying the cage that the cardboard box had some creasing/scoring marks, but didn't think anything of it at the time. However, I suspect that this means the box was dropped or pressed at some stage resulting in the damage to the plastic part inside. There is absolutely no way the damage occurred between me purchasing the box and opening it at home, however, I am a bit worried about taking it back to the shop because they could, I suppose, claim that I might have damaged it after I took it out of the shop. Anybody got any ideas where I stand with this? Don't really want to enter into argument I can't win (bit of a wuss) but on the other hand it is £40.00 down the drain and daughter has a face like a smacked bum!!
Unfortunately, the box was not opened in the shop to check the contents. It was sealed up and just picked up off the shelf.

Just take it back and explain. I have returned things like this loads of times and no-one has ever accused me of damaging it myself. They should be more concerned with providing good customer service than trying to wriggle out of replacing damaged goods.

Is it just me who gets a bit disappointed when I'm up for a good argument with a shop and they turn out to be all reasonable??
