What drives you mad and what makes you smile.

As a child from a large family (I don't have one myself)

good - lots of fun, always having someone to play with, rarely lonely or bored, sense of belonging or being in an instant 'gang'

bad - no privacy, always having to share, much less attention from parents, having to fend for self a lot and grow up quickly (as the oldest), arguments/bickering/fights, passed on clothes/toys (embarrassing as you get older), very competitive environment

mad: on this board all the posts seem to be about having another child or what car... Trying to fit everything into the day.

good: I get more cuddles than anyone else I know. Lovely when they play together. Trying to remember all the good things and bad things going on in all their lives.

The biggest thing that drives me mad about my large family (I have five siblings) is the lack of communication between members of the family now we are all adults. Everyone assumes someone else will have told the rest of the family something, or passed a message on, but everyone leaves it up to someone else. I guess it;s jus the logistics of communicating between lots of people living in different cities.

The best stuff is the love and laughter, and all the memories of our childhood, the hours we spend reminiscing about our childhood when we all get together as adults now.

Well, as a child:

Mad: sharing my mum with so many other children (well, only 3 other children!)

Smile: wow! Loads. Um, always someone to play with, always someone to stand up for you, togetherness, closeness, the ability to have fantastic fantasy games with so many participants! Christmas, the lovely family get-togethers now we're all older.

As a parent:

Mad: The laundry - at least one load every bloody day! And drying it is the hardest thing - easy if it's sunny and warm, a nightmare in the spring and autumn.

The bickering - that's the worst thing.

Sometimes the constant noise when I'm trying to work something out.

The constant 'Muuuummmmmmmm's.

Smile: Having them climb on me.

All the cuddles.

Seeing them playing together.

Seeing the wonderful big games that they get into where they're all invovled

Hearing them in fits of giggles somewhere in the house or in the back of the car

Taking them out places - they're really nicely behaved children out and about (if only they were at home too!), and are all very attractive little girls, so we get heaps and heaps of comments, which just make my heart burst

Feeling ever so slightly smug that I am capable (just) of parenting 4 children with very small age gaps!

Seeing them comforting one another if one is hurt or upset

Seeing the big ones helping the little ones with things
