Have had my 13 week scan today and am desperate to go baby shopping but unfortunately we have everything, cot, pram (although am working on a new one), clothes, bedding, steralizer, bread pump. You get the picture.

What can buy the poor mite ?

I bought DS2 a fluffy NZ sheepskin to lie on, a special baby one. We had everything else they were 23 months apart so all clothes etc the right season so I wanted something that was just his.

It was fab, he loved it and we moved from Moses basket to cot to pram to bouncy chair to keep him warm/cool and happy.

We have one of those, I told it's going to be a nightmare

Never had a baby swing for my first but bought one for No 2. was a lifesaver!
Just get something that's frivolous rather than useful!

MillyMollyMoo · 08/12/2009 19:12

Ah now we don't have one of those, which one did you get ?

nothing! enjoy not having to spend money.
ok it's nice to buy baby stuff, but silly to spend money just for the sake of it.

if it's the opposite sex you'll be able to go clothes shopping after s/he is born

MillyMollyMoo · 08/12/2009 19:14

DH thinks that, lol

Two years apart is a good gap, IME. Just don't get bullied into toilet-training the elder before the baby arrives. It's much easier to have two in nappies than to have "Mummy I need wee weeeeeee!" every time you settle down to feed the baby.

I agree with sheepskin fleece. We bought one for dc2 (ie the 2y gap) and have used it every day for the past 7y, apart from the 3m between her stopping using the buggy, and dc3 being born (dc3 being the 4y gap, which was much tougher than the 2y gap).

Though of course that meant that dc3 had yet another hand-me-down!

Maybe dc2 will be the other sort, and you'll get to buy lots of dresses/hoodies.

i got a 2nd hand bugaboo for my last baby, having always used a baby bjorn and then an umbrella pushchair once they were a bit bigger. am actually annoyed i never had one before. it's AMAZING. so easy to push and they FACE you so you can walk along smiling at them and making them laugh. i look so lovey dovey with her when i'm out people keep asking if it's my first (i'm always too embarrassed to say it's number 5). agree with thisisyesterday that it's good not to buy things you don't need though. amazing how little you REALLY need for a baby.

tvfriend · 08/12/2009 19:31

Was a fisher price one- bought it off Gumtree so was cheap but new. Had a 17 month gap so put DS in it when trying to give his older sister her meals etc. He loved it and often dozed off. Much better than the bouncy chair I had before (although that went in the bathroom so he could sit in that when she was having a bath etc.)
Poor thing tented to sit around quite a lot but he was a very chilled baby! Making up for it now though.

I agree with thisisyesterday. I wouldn't spend money just for the sake of it.

If the baby has everything s/he needs then hardly a 'poor mite'

Enjoy not having to get stuff in. Just relax. Do the buying after the birth when you know what you really need (if anything).

If you really feel the urge to buy why not get a special shawl or blanket that is just for this baby.

sweetkitty · 09/12/2009 15:39

I have to get a new pram for DB4 as stupidly sold my P&T a few months before deciding on no4 apart from that everything is hand me downs.

IF this one is a boy (very much doubt it though) will enjoy buying new clothes but will probably get a new changing mat and maybe one or two new outfits.

Oh and will knit a new blanket just for them. I think a blanket and a wee comforter teddy would be lovely.

catinthehat2 · 09/12/2009 15:53

I like the idea of a bread pump, could do with one now!
I would buy a special tiny toy that can stick around the cot and the pram, and get tucked into a suitcase when they leave home, you'll always know you bought it when you couldn't wait for the baby but it was way too early to really get useful things.

slushy06 · 09/12/2009 17:00

DD had mostly ds hand me downs except I bought her a new shawl (a few girls clothes obviously). Ds shawl was really expensive my nan bought it and the shawl is really close knit and the size of a double bed took about 6 months to make ( I always was my nan's golden grandchild ).

Made winter really easy just shove him in and it was thick enough that it could be used to carry him to like people used to do if I wanted to nip to the shop.

I didn't plan it but ds likes to curl up with it if he is ill so I bought dd a equally nice one and thought I will store them well and offer them the shawls back when they have children if they want them and the shawls remain in good condition.

verybusyspider · 15/12/2009 23:08

get them their own newborn baby outfit - each of mine has had something of their very own to wear and its in each of their memory boxes.

play pen is very useful.... each of the boys has kind of the same things bought for them but their own if you know what I mean - a special cuddly toy, a baby book, a photo album, keepsake hand and foot prints done, own set of cutlery, bookends, all 3 have 3 shelves each in their rooms of 'special' things that the others can't have - anything bought just for them or they have made.

This time I bought a second hand baby food cooker - bebe cook - from ebay, wish I'd got that for my first so I'd have got more use out of it, ds3 is 6 months old and its a life saver and goes in dishwasher.
whats the age gap? do you need a booster seat or high chair for older one?
are you creating a new bedroom/nursery? just go to town with decorating...

MillyMollyMoo · 23/12/2009 16:18

The age gap is 6 years but I kept everything am looking forward to a good clear out after it's done with it all.
The babe will be sharing wih us until we can move house so might be in our room a couple of years, but I am thinking lovely bedding might be the way forward.
Thanks and a Merry Christmas to all

How about its own taggie blanket? New to the baby, but small enough not to be 'wasting' money!
