When my brood were younger they had ice cream or a yogurt.

no teenagers and young adults it has been dropped and I was discussing Christmas dinner .

Asking what they would like. Answer more main food !!

Do any of you cook less main to serve dessert/puddings ?

Thanks

Shop bought Christmas pudding for those that like it and shop bought Yule log for those that don’t. I work full time, have two children and a dog. I love baking but sadly insufficient time at Christmas. Maybe when I’ve retired!

GKG1 · 21/12/2025 19:28

We only do a pudding once or twice a week or special occasions really, but if I asked my kids this they would definitely want pudding, maybe this is proof that restriction isn’t the best idea!!

Catsandcwtches · 21/12/2025 19:28

I usually do a cheesecake. My mum usually offers either trifle (home made) or Christmas pudding (shop bought)

sprigatito · 21/12/2025 19:29

Of course we serve Christmas pudding! And Christmas cake, Yule log, trifle…it wouldn’t be Christmas without puddings. I’d find it very weird if I went elsewhere for Christmas and there were no desserts.

shellyleppard · 21/12/2025 19:30

Jaffa dome from Iceland is absolutely gorgeous!!! Or a cheesecake....❤️

blankcanvas3 · 21/12/2025 19:31

We have Christmas pudding and something else for the people (me) who don’t like christmas pudding, then cheese after that!

Maxstress3 · 21/12/2025 19:31

Whenever I do a meal for a special occasion or just inviting friends round it has to be started, main and dessert all home cooked

Raera · 21/12/2025 19:31

First time in donkeys years I've not made a Christmas pudding, feels a bit weird but although everyone likes it, only small portions are eaten and then it gets dumped in March!
Sticky toffee this year and nephew is bringing a light, cold dessert as his contribution

IceIceSlippyIce · 21/12/2025 19:31

Tonight, DS1 is eating the ends of (homemade) mince pies, and DS2 is eating (homemade) cranberry& orange cake.

fashionqueen0123 · 21/12/2025 19:32

My kids love desserts! Cant have Xmas with no puddings!
We have Christmas pudding and a chocolate version. Then Xmas chocolate cake. Ice cream’s all sorts!

ohh · 21/12/2025 19:42

I have bought Christmas pudding for me with lashings of extra thick brandy cream.

a chocolate choice bum cake for others and a lemon torte just in case .

I have made a Christmas cake which has all gone .

But miss the days of making fussy chocolate mouse etc. work gets in the way !

What on earth is a chocolate choice bum cake????? Shock

I'm dying to know what a chocolate choice bum cake is 🤣

During the week we usually have yoghurt/skyr or ice cream available if people want dessert. Weekends I might bake something. At Christmas we have Christmas cake, trifle, cheese and biscuits, or homemade gingerbread available. If DS can be bothered to join in with icing it I might make a yule log but he's really the only person who'd eat it (at least if there were alternatives available).

I like Christmas pudding but no-one else does so I avoid buying one in order to avoid eating the whole thing. If I take the icing and marzipan off a chunk of Christmas cake and give it a 30 second ping in the microwave it's a good substitute.

Me too -the mind boggles 🤣

you could always buy one of those mini puddings for one person!

RecordBreakers · 21/12/2025 21:05

Are you talking about Christmas Day ?
or
'When people come round' ?
or
Sunday roast ?
or
Every evening after your meal on a normal working day ?

As my answers would be different.

ohh · 21/12/2025 22:52

Generic after every evening meal . I was looking at Jamie Oliver’s books and thought I never do dessert as maybe serving too much main meal food serving .

only in special event days do my family eat dessert as in Easter , summer bbq and Christmas

RecordBreakers · 21/12/2025 23:19

Well, in that case, no, we don't have puddings, routinely.

Will do at Christmas.
Will do if people come round.
I will usually make a couple of crumbles / pies in the Autumn when my neighbour gives me lots of apples, but that is all.

sprigatito · 21/12/2025 23:27

Ah, you mean everyday puddings. We don’t do pudding after every meal, and I don’t really eat them outside of special occasions, but I have two medically underweight people in the house for very different reasons, so there are always homemade cakes, custard, brownies, flapjacks etc available, and if I think my dad hasn’t eaten enough at dinner time I’ll sometimes present him with a big bowl of something like apple crumble and custard because it’s easy calories and he’ll eat it.

mondaytosunday · 21/12/2025 23:31

We didn’t routinely have dessert when younger - a piece of fruit maybe. On a special occasion yes. This Christmas we are too full to have it after the meal but later in the evening sure.

This actually happened to me . 1st year, celebrating with my inlaws (not in the uk) and mil was picking up ice cream. I asked what we were having with it. We weren't. That was to be the pudding! I soon remedied that!! You can't have Christmas with no proper puddings.

QueenOfThorns · 22/12/2025 07:37

I don’t think she’s going to tell us about the bum cake Sad

It's probably one of those special family recipes that gets handed down in secret...

For generic everyday desserts, when DS was younger and very much of the opinion that dessert had to happen after every dinner I would do a bake every Sunday. Depending on the weather (if very hot, avoid anything with icing), it might be brownies, flapjack, Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, or chocolate fudge cake. Every now and then if we were all having pudding I'd make a steamed syrup sponge in the microwave to serve with ice cream. Yesterday I had egg yolks leftover from making Christmas cake icing and ricciarelli so I made custard tarts.

In terms of whether or not it's too much food to have dessert after a meal, you can either make your meals slightly smaller to allow for dessert (or just do it on a night when everyone's ravenous, last night for example no-one had had lunch), or subscribe to the belief one of my husband's granddads had - that everyone has a separate 'dessert' stomach that doesn't get full when you have dinner 😁

Sbmpp · 25/12/2025 00:51

I just found out “puddings” were desserts. I would love to try a sticky toffee something? We’re having a store bought (Costco) pumpkin and an apple crisp. I love dessert!
