Feeling cramped in our 3 bed house, how to fit 4 children in?!

Currently pregnant with baby no.4 my children are 6, 4 and 20 month old. We live in a 3 bed semi, I have found the floor plan of what our house is like but feeling stressed on how to fit everything and everyone in!! Downstairs feels a lot more spacious as it is all open plan but upstairs feels so squashed. Currently the small bedroom is my daughters and she can’t even fit a wardrobe in that room so her clothes are in the master bedroom. My 4 year old is in the second bedroom and we have a nursery wardrobe in there which fits all his clothes. 20 month old clothes are also in the master bedroom fitted in wardrobes.
dont know where to put anything but feel like I’m not using the space to its full advantage? How would you lay out the rooms to maximise space and storage?! Moving isn’t on the cards for us right now as it is just too expensive and we already pay a lot now.

Oldest two bedbunk/one room. In a few years youngst two bedbunk/one room. One room for parents.
Downsize all your clothes, things and stuff to a minimum.

Can the wall be moved between the children's rooms to even them up?

Take out the double bed in the second bedroom and put bunk beds in, with bed guards if you need them. Swap out your daughter's bed for a high bed with storage underneath.

The ensuite if removed would leave a very big room, can some of your children share that. Baby in with you for 2 years in medium room

Is a loft conversion possible? What's downstairs like?

Is that a boiler cupboard on the landing? A combi boiler could free up some space there (if it can work for your house).

FleurDeFleur · 31/05/2025 23:04

Take out your en suite - loads of storage there.
Bunk beds.

You should sleep in no 2

Baby 20m old in box room at 3yrs move them out with siblings into room 4 and baby goes into box.
you can do a triple which is 2 singles either end and a bunk bed across the top for oldest.

Sort your life out had an amazing one for triplets. Ignore the title and see if you can find the episode

Maybe remove ensuite so there's more room and rehouse boiler downstairs?

Really you need to move or convert the attic.

You have the middle room DC share largest room.

We had 2 hanging rails in wardrobes for DC clothes.

Massively declutter especially clothes. You can wash so frequently they don’t need much.

RandomMess · 31/05/2025 23:10

Can you build a mid height bed over the stair bulkhead, then have easy access storage underneath.

Use the height of each room - so floor to ceiling storage.

Again declutter declutter declutter.

Mine were in cots with the side removed until they started school as they took up less space.

You can get triple off set bunks when they are older.

Agree large bedroom for the two eldest, that will mean enough storage and maybe some room to play.

Whilst I think the ensuite is a waste of space I'd keep it if you're staying there longer term, one bathroom for a family of 6 will be hard.

For the future consider extending the bedrooms into the eves, you basically get a mezzanine (with full height bars) as a sleeping area then space at the bottom for more beds or play. Friend did this and I've seen on a few TV shows, it's a great use if space.
