3 isofix Car seats in back

Zok · 29/01/2024 13:50

Anyone have a list of car seats that can fit in back of a 5 seater compact SUV

we have 2 rear outer isofix points and car dealer installed a third in middle seat though he had to cut the isofix adapter he told me to get

it needs to be a newborn seat and 2 older car seats (4-12y)

Minnie Mouse isofix seat , recaro and cosatto currently

would a nania seat be narrower

When we install the older seat in middle space it’s hard to see the seatbelt buckle as it’s a tight squeeze

The Hyundai car dealer told us he had a customer with 3 seats at the back but I think he’s not done a great job of installing the third isofix point

2 joie 4yr and up type seats and a maci cosi family fix with (think it's called) pebble for baby fit across the middle seats of our Peugeot 5008.

2 flat seats in the boot for longer journeys (not done this yet as they're obsessed with being together)

Please get your car and the seats checked by a different dealership. Nothing should be "cut" to achieve an installation. As a road safety professional I am extremely concerned about this.

You can do a web search for user manuals of the seats. The user manual would provide the dimensions and help you make comparison between seats before buying.
I also generally recommend using a Which? Membership for a month to review the safety ratings of the seats and to include that in the comparison where possible. The Which? Tests include all the safety tests I would recommend.
I know it's a hard balance, especially with costs.
It absolutely essential that whatever seats you choose that they are installed properly.

Please double check the Minnie Mouse and Nania seats aren't manufactured by Team Tex. They have awful reputations for safety and some have been shown to just break apart in crash tests.

That’s an official Hyundai dealership
salesman told me to get an isofix attachment from eBay but when I brought it , it was too wide for the middle seat

A Hyundai salesman won’t know anything about safe car seat installation.

A lot of good high quality seats with high safety ratings don’t need isofix for older children, I’d look into some of them from decent brands with Swedish testing etc. A Minnie Mouse branded seat means nothing and gives no information to people reading to provide advice, go to someone who is an expert in car seat safety.

@Ihatewaiting2022 this is the isofix attachment he told me to get , it was too wide for the middle back seat so he cut it
if you know another attachment or way to get an isofix point in middle pls let me know

I’ve also considered multimac but it is pricey

Renault Grand Scenic fits 3 isofix and is great sized family car. We had to sell ours due to ulez and wished we just bought another ulez compliant one instead of the SUV we got to replace it.

But how do you fit the seat into the car for older children if the seatbelt is used to secure them in @Garman

With the car seats for older children, the seat belt does the work. Isofix is only designed to hold the seat and child weight up to 33kg. I think isofix is a red herring here and you need to speak to a car seat fitting company about the safest way to achieve what you need.

You’ve answered your own question to me, it’s secured with the seatbelt, doesn’t need isofix.

@zok

I would look on the Hyundai website and if they sell your model with a middle isofix, even as an optional extra, then you know it's ok.
If Hyundai don't sell it, then the vehicle hasn't been designed and engineered for isofix in the middle.
I am afraid I would advise against anything third party (not from Hyundai). Unless they (the supplier) can certify somehow that it's been tested and approved for use in your specific model. But I very much doubt that.

I really hope it was a genuine Hyundai part he suggested. If not, I'd be very wary and do some checks as above.

In general isofix is only on the outer seats and child restraints in the middle have to use the seat belt.

Isofix is a means to make fitting seats easier and more often correctly installed. If you won't be frequently moving the seats in and out, then a belt installation is fine.

I'd seek some help from professional installers such as Halfords.

Best wishes

They wear the 5 point harness that’s in their seat until they are old enough to not need a 5 point harness and move to using the same seat or a different one with the seatbelt instead, depending on the seat. There’s lots of reading you can do online about rear facing and car seat safety, maybe start with that to get some idea of the different seats/stages.

The seatbelt goes through the positioner over the child's shoulder, across their body and plugs into the socket. It holds in both the child and the seat. The seat lifts the child up and directs the belt down, so it is in a suitable position for their smaller body.

Ok and the seat is still safe even if not connected to the isofix points ?

Yes, but that yes depends on the seat we can’t say for definite without knowing the seat, just that many seats for children are safe once properly installed with the seatbelt.

Does anyone know if it’s normal for the isofix base of newborn seat to rattle around it doesn’t sound secure and there are numbers 1-8 on the side of the seat currently it’s on number 3/4

No it shouldn’t rattle it should be secure, please please go see or speak to a car seat safety specialist.

Please don't bother with Halfords they really don't have enough knowledge. It shouldn't be rattling at all. If you're happy to post a general area someone might be able to point you to a car seat specialist we used one she was fab and offered klarna too

Please please don’t go to Halfords or rely on them or Which. There’s some excellent advice on Facebook - Car Seat Advice UK. Lots of posts about which cars will fit three car seats, as well as the safest options. The admins are fantastic and knowledgeable. You ideally want to go to a specialist, independent car seat safety shop - there are a number around the country - who can advise on the best seats for your vehicle and children. Please don’t get a Nania seat - they’re a death-trap.

I used the incar safety centre for advise when I had similar car seat juggles.

I had infant (isofix base plus seat) rear facing on passenger side, front facing booster (Britax adventure was a good slim one, but this a fair few years ago!) on drivers side, and then a rear facing booster (britax two way elite) in the centre. The rear facing booster was secured using the seat belt, and had a harness for my dd to use. It was rear facing up to 18kg. Dd2 was in it until she was nearly 7 (she was a small child!).

I fitted all 3 seats across a Honda CRV, and it worked well for almost 2 years (when I changed car)

There are very few compact SUVs that can fit 3 car seats across, and the ones that can it's only select combinations of seats. Your current set up of the DIY isofix in the middle seat sounds rather terrifying though op. What ages are your kids and what cars are you looking at?
