Rain rain rain, dark grey sky for days if not weeks apart from the odd moment. I'm actually starting to feel really really down and with 3 toddlers in the house and constantly doing activities especially in the mornings with them and not being able to go parks, beach, forest or even let them in the garden to play im actually starting to feel very down yesterday and today. Im not a cryer and this morning soon as I opened curtains saw the grey day again and pouring rain I just burst into tears. Feel like I'm plodding doing same same same till this weather goes away. Any ideas please to help raise my mood?

Embrace it. I always feel guilty staying in if it’s a nice day but you can fully hunker down.

turn it into a positive, get loads of blankets, make a fort, shut the curtains and blinds, put movies on all day and soon enough it will be over!

Can you put on a relentlessly cheerful film or music? I know how you feel, except for the toddlers! 💐

Indoor play areas? Aquariums, science museums, zoos and safari parks have many inside areas too plus you drive round in a car to see the animals. We bought annual passes for most places as it worked out a lot cheaper. We all wrapped up warm and went out in all weathers to these places so long as no mud was involved we would traipse around these sorts of places for a couple of hours in any weather.

How old are your toddlers? My 3yo would think there was nothing better than splashing about in the rain with her wellies but I only have 1. 9yo would be happy to stay home and watch films all day.

Puddle suits and a brolly did it for me when I had 4 under 5 then a hot chocolate with squirts cream to warm up when back home!

Living in the rainiest part of the Scottish Highlands I know exactly how you feel!
I try and get out despite the rain every day as it helps so much, even with my little one, but I appreciate that can be hard if you're not used to it.
I find a good even half an hour splash outside, even just in the garden is really good, toddler never seemed to be bothered if its raining as long as there was a puddlesuit and umbrella to be had.
Also in really grey periods writing out a timetable for the day and sticking to it helps me a lot! Because even if I am feeling rubbish the timetable tells me what to do and I can limp from one activity to another, even if it's just 10.00 get jigsaws out 10.30 give a snack 11.00 give them a long bath with bath crayons 12.00 lunch etc...
Hope you get some better weather soon.

You just need to kit them out in waterproofs and get outside anyway.

Usually a bit of rain isn't a problem we live in the Scottish borders and I will put there all over suits on and there happy to plodge but it's not like it's a little bit of rain. Unfortunately we don't live near any safaris, museums or animal farms. There is one soft play area 45 mins away I managed to get them booked into it last week but have to wait another 3 for a space again as it's popular. The twins are 2 and son is 3. We have done several drives just to get out the house but the last 2 weeks a lot of roads have been closed around us due to flooding rivers which made it a little difficult. Usually I have them out and about even the walkways around our house with the dog but they've been flooded for a while now aswell. But thankyou for ideas. Luckily the kids are fairly easy going so haven't gone nuts yet from being indoors so much but I think I am 😂

I'm going to do it wet suits, wellies for a while in the garden. I think a part is probably I feel guilty keeping them in so much recently maybe and usually I'm off out doing things. And I never thought about a time table so I'm going to give that a try will sit down tonight once there in bed and write one down. Thankyou for these ideas and I never thought let them play longer in bath that's a good one so used to one in one out also will do that later.

Can you do some crafty things at home? Play doh, painting, sticking… My 3yo sits for hours with play doh. Or set up an obstacle course for them to jump around on.

TheaBrandt · 02/11/2023 08:40

Do you have a large ish indoor space? I copied a neighbour and bought my own inflatable bouncy castle. Best purchase ever. Plug it in up it goes then goes back into a large bag. I only had 2 but this saved my sanity in the winter

Donkeyseason · 02/11/2023 08:42

Get yourselves some nicer than normal food and treats and spend the afternoon snuggled up eating and watching a movie with them.

grievinggirlneedsadvice · 02/11/2023 08:48

Aww yes you've had it rough in the Scottish Borders just now.
Well done sounds like you are doing amazingly- yes a long bath saved me on many a lockdown day!!
I don't know how big your garden is and if you have any coloured containers (we usually paint the bottom of eggboxes (takes ages even before you get outside!!) but they might get soggy in this weather) but getting them to collect red things in the garden and putting them in a red container, green for green etc can take ages and get their mind off the weather while still being outside.
Hope you get a break soon xx

We’ve just got our eldest a new cabin bed with a den underneath and that amused my 2 year old twins for hours going up and down the steps!

Otherwise it’s been trips to the park in wellies and puddle suits, play dates with friends who have kids and a toddler group this week. I can’t face soft play with the 3 of them although my eldest does help out a bit. I don’t think it’s fair for her to sacrifice her playtime to look after her brothers.

Maybe try a disco day? Put some music videos on and have a dance around.

If you have a paddling pool stick it up indoor, fill it with lentils, rice, box of cheap cereal. Give them some scoops, diggers, cars and let them play in it. My kids have had best days doing that.
