Dealing without a kitchen for 10 days, how?!

In summer were having a refurb. Estimated 10 days but Google reviews for the company suggest it may take much longer (awful reviews!)

How will I cope without a kitchen for 10 days 😭

I did 8 weeks (don't ask) with a slow cooker znd a microwave. Was fine. I set up a sort of camping kitchen.

I did this for a few months & had an air fryer, toaster & kettle too. Used a basin to wash dishes in the bath. Was an absolute pain but we managed.

second a single hob portable induction hob. Ours came from ikea too.

I got one from Aldi £29.99

Round our way you can hire a kitchen in a caravan that gets set up on your drive.. probably costs a bomb though.

Good luck! It may be easier coping with this in the summer as you might be having cold meals anyway. Quiche/cold meat etc and salad, bulked out with bread. Hummus, other dips, carrot sticks and so on, heat some pitta in the toaster. Cheese and bread or crackers salad. Fruit.

We managed as our builder ensured the cooker stayed where it was still the last minute and he reconnected our sink every night, even when it was sat on its own in the kitchen. I think there was only one night we had no water or waste in the kitchen.

We did 16 weeks (17 years ago - need a new kitchen again but putting it off!) They said 3 weeks....... We had a kettle, microwave and toaster in the dining room. The main problem was no sink and our downstairs toilet sink is way too small. We ate from every takeaway locally, worked our way through every ready meal from all local supermarkets and vowed never to use the kitchen company again (don't recommend them either). It was early spring and the weather was terrible. I'd be much better prepared this time and will be using a local independent company not a chain.....

I’ve done it for several months. Which was actually ok. I set up a mini kitchen on a sideboard in the hall. Microwave/ kettle/ Airfryer/ single hob. Bbq in garden.

Make life easy for yourself, batch cook now so you have a freezer of ping and ding food. Liners for the Airfryer. I found paper plates really flimsy , they do disposable bamboo ones now that are rigid but more expensive. Same with disposable bamboo forks etc.

I hated washing up in the bathroom. I set up a camping table next to bbq and hung up four solar showers ( Aldi) I think I had about 12 litres of warm water to wash/ rinse the dishes every evening. Just refill with garden hose. I bought a set of enamel camping plates/ mugs so it was all a bit hardier. Multiple washing up basins. One to carry dirty stuff in. One for soapy wash, one to rinse in, dry and put clean stuff in final bowl.

In case it rains, Scotland so happened a lot. I half hung a tarp ready to be unfurled attached to a couple of clips that would shelter my washing up. Most of the stuff I reuse for camping.

Well we have this to look forward to later this week. 😂

We plan to move the fridge into the hallway - freezers are in the garage anyway - two air fryers and microwave plus travel kettle in the dining room. Definitely not doing washing up in my beautiful new bathrooms! I have 2 new washing up bowls and will fill those in the bathroom, wash up, (Until I get my dishwasher back working), and then throw dirty water down the outside drain.
We also have planned a menu for 10 days and are using LOTS of disposable dishes.

just Seen it’s housing association. They’ll be quick!!! Ours was done in 2.5 days they had teams of people working all round the area and it was like a production line. Fast fast! But no checking anything with us as they went.

femfemlicious · 30/04/2023 10:59

Lots of microwave rice. Cook some stews and curries to go with it and freeze. Definitely paper plates. Just lots of things that you can cook or warm up in the microwave

Violetcrush · 30/04/2023 11:02

Camping kitchen set up, with the microwave it felt quite luxurious 😂

CremeEggThief · 30/04/2023 11:02

10 DAYS? Get a grip, OP!😆
Microwave, kettle and toaster in your living/sitting room and even a camping grill/stove if you must. Washing up in the bathroom.

Soontobe60 · 30/04/2023 11:08

I made a load of freezer meals before hand, chilli, bolognese sauce type of things. I bought packet microwaveable rice, froze portions of cooked pasta. I set up a ‘kitchen’ area in a spare bedroom.
In reality when it came to it we ate far too many take aways, had far too many breakfasts in Morrisons cafe just up the road, and generally hated it!!!

Only if the camping stove / grill is an electric one!

If I were you, Id set up a washing up station in your garden, under a gazebo if necessary. I know from experience that carrying washing up bowls of dirty water around the house is a recipe for disaster.

I'm just coming to the end. It will definitely take longer than 10 days!

Toaster, kettle, fridge freezer, slow cooker, 2 camping stoves and microwave set up in the dining room. Ditched anything which required frying or grilling and it was quite easy. Pasta and rice can be cooked in the microwave and we got more use out of the slow cooker than in the 10 years we've had it - curries, soups, stews etc. A couple of salads. We never resorted to ding dinners and only had a couple of takeaways.

Fortunately the washing machine stayed in the same place so was back in use quite quickly. My main bugbear is having to wash up in the bath - it kills my back. Fortunately our bathroom is downstairs so we aren't lugging everything upstairs and back down. The new kitchen sink has been sneering at me for a week - it's in place but not plumbed in yet Sad

Not a worry as I will be doing it in the garage. Will get the other half to do any lifting and carrying.🤣
Hoping my dishwasher isn't too long out of action.🤞

PinkFootstool · 30/04/2023 13:37

Frankly ten days is probably fine! Ours was done in less than that by one man with separate trades coming in for electrics, gas and plastering. 4.5mths is taking the piss unless you live in Buckingham Palace....

Your HA chaps will be doing lots of these, so I'd imagine they'll be on it.

We set up a spare room with the toaster, kettle, microwave and air fryer. Lots of takeaways tbh, but it was fine for plenty of other meals. Toast, things on toast and bags of rice featured heavily 😂
