I don’t know anyone IRL with big families I’d love to know where in the country you are and how you manage with housing/sharing bedrooms?

Only because I’m nosy! I have (so far!) 1 DS 4 is a dream

We live south east so quite expensive and a three bedroom house. Not a massive house but nice.

So we have one bedroom for us, one for DS and one which would be for DC number 2 but does mean we lose our home office.

Hard to get a bigger house than that around here, very few 4 bedrooms plus

I live in the West Midlands. I rent from a family member though. 4 double bedrooms upstairs and I have a small room downstairs that I've made into my room and that just fits my bed. Still have dining/living rooms thankfully. There's 4 kids plus me in the house. No option to not have individual rooms anymore due to additional needs/ages/sex of children. Eldest two did their time sharing for about 13 years though.

The way things are going with my youngest I may well just go and bunk in their room with them when I look at the frequency at which he wants to share with me!

Live SE, 4DC, 6 bed house in a village. The DC used to share but now they are older, they all have their own rooms. The smallest quite small bedroom is used as a study/home office. We know we are fortunate, we’ve lived here a long time and had a lot of equity moving in.

RussianSpy101 · 16/03/2022 20:39

We’re in South Yorkshire and have a few friends with 4 children and 1 of our couple friends have 5.

The ones with 5 have 4 double bedrooms.
They have a room for themselves, the eldest girl (8) has her own room, twin boys (6) share and girls (4) (2) share.
The twins have a bunk bed and the girls have single beds.

Friends with 4 all have 4/5 bed houses with the closest in age sharing a bedroom in the 4 bed houses.

NetballHoop · 16/03/2022 20:46

In the South East with 4DC. We extended to add a fifth bedroom. They all shared when little but by secondary school age we were able to give them a room each.
Currently we have 3 at uni and one who has come back post uni.

In the East Mids with 4DC in a 5 (or 7 if you count the loft conversion, we have it set up as an office and a storage room though) bedroom house. Cost just less than £400k a year ago. It's not pretty and is on a very busy road but it's perfect for us.

Not me but my sister. Lives in SE.

She has a 3 storey townhouse. 3 beds top floor, bonus room and converted garage bottom floor and living spaces in the middle.

She and bil on top floor with teen nephew in small room, younger 2 boys (10 and 13) share 3rd bedroom. Teen niece in converted garage on ground floor. The bonus room is an office/spare room but could be a bedroom if teens live there into their 20s and move office to small bedroom. The younger boys will always share as kids, they're both SEN and find it hard to sleep alone.

Before this they were in a 3 bed terrace (1970s so good sized bedrooms). She and bil had the second bedroom, Brice had smallest bedroom and all 3 boys shared the largest room. Wasn't ideal towards the end as oldest nephew couldn't use the room in the evening and space was lacking downstairs. But they coped ok overall.

They paid £410,000 for current house. It was marketed as 5 bedroom but really originally a 3 bed with extra reception room and garage. It's a great size though and lots of space. They paid £50,000 less than we did for our 4 bed town house. ( new build)

North West 7 dc still at home , six bedrooms. Total house cost including extension to go from a four to six bed £125k four years ago.

Neddles · 16/03/2022 21:05

We’re in Dorset, and have 5 kids in a 3 bedroom house. We’re at a pinch point now, with no real options of changing house or living space.
Eldest (girl) in box room on her own, youngest (girl) in the middle room with me (separate beds now, although collect for first 5 years). Three boys in the largest room with a single and a set of bunks. Room divider to try and give some separation to the room.

AHungryCaterpillar · 16/03/2022 21:22

London. 3 bed house.

SparklyTroll · 17/03/2022 19:55

Also in south east, 4 kids, 4 bedroom house. My 2 boys share and 2 girls have their own room each. We have converted 3/4 of our garage for my husbands home off but as kids get older I can see us using it as a bedroom one day if we don’t move to a bigger house

Chely · 18/03/2022 11:48

Yorkshire, 3 bed semi with 6 kids.
We have a big master with baby in cot-bed, our twins both had toddler beds in our room until 5yrs. 4 girls in 2 bunk beds in a double room. 1 boy in loft bed in single room. I want a bigger house but dh will not commit to moving until he retires from his current career, almost 4 years left so we will make do for now. Many with the same type of house as ours have converted the integral garage but we are not willing to change it is a multiple use room for us. Loft conversion and extensions build cost vs value gained are not great, bought it off plan 15 years ago.

How are your kids with sharing rooms? Do they disrupt each other at all

elliejjtiny · 18/03/2022 17:04

South West, 5 dc, 3 bedroom house. Dc are aged 15-7 and for the most part don't mind sharing. They only really use their bedroom for sleeping in anyway.

Jmaho · 18/03/2022 17:12

We live in a village in Worcestershire. Children are 2 boys 2 girls aged between 11 and 4
We live in a 4 bed detached house with 4 beds upstairs and we use the large playroom/office at the front of the house as a 5th bedroom. Very few 5 bed houses where we live and can't convert our loft for various reasons. It works well. House is probably worth about 450k now we bought 5 years ago fortunately. It's only about 20 years old so isn't huge and garden isn't either but is perfect in other ways

MrsGHarrison87 · 18/03/2022 17:13

Liverpool. We need a bigger house but can't find anything affordable in our area.

CrabbyCat · 18/03/2022 17:38

@BiscuitLover3678 I'm one of 4, and until I was eleven we lived in a 3 bed house, we then moved to a 4 bed. Sharing wasn't a problem until we hit the teenage years. As young kids I felt sorry for our neighbours where the kids had their own space rather than jealous - we had constant playmates and they seemed lonely. Similarly my older 2 DC share aged 5 and 7 and it's very clear that they like having each other there at night, and in fact would given a choice would be in with us rather than in their own room.

As teenagers however, we argued a lot and then it did become an issue!

AHungryCaterpillar · 18/03/2022 17:39

Yeh they do but everyone I know has kids sharing a room even those with only 2 or 3 pretty normal for kids to share rooms

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 18/03/2022 17:55

North East with 5 dc at home. Rented as previously owned with ex...
3 ds's have own rooms and 2 x dd's share. Both dd's messy as hell so I just don't go in. Ds's keep rooms pretty tidy.

Chely · 18/03/2022 18:34

Teenager would love her own space but doesn't complain too much so long as the younger ones don't mess with her stuff.

Incentive for them to fly the nest.

MyDcAreMarvel · 18/03/2022 21:30

Only my multiples share currently and they can’t bare to be apart so it works fine for us.
