Daughter expecting baby #2

Last year I offered DD (23 at the time) to move back home with her DP and DS (moved in 3 weeks before giving birth) whilst they saved for their house deposit - it's extremely difficult to get on the property ladder these days and I genuinely am happy to have them back home not renting while they save, seeing DGC every day is so fulfilling! I've looked forward to being a grandmother for many many years Thanks I know a lot of people wouldn't want to live with their DGC or own adult children, aside from the occasional bicker which are few and far between it's really nice overall.

We openly talk about their savings and I'm aware of how much they have so far. Current prices are expecting them to save around 15K for the house deposit alone.

We've just found out they're expecting DC 2 and I'm very happy for them, she always expressed having babies close together so it wasn't exactly unexpected.
Although I do worry - they have the large conservatory as a large play room/lounge and a decent sized double bedroom. I'm worried about space for this next baby. Given their savings I don't think they'll be here for more than 6 months after the new baby arrives - but I still want them to feel comfortable.

Does anyone have any space tips for living with a large family?

Maybe an extension? Or a granny flat?

stillhappytohelp · 11/01/2021 11:56

I wouldn’t be having major building work like an extension if you don’t think they’ll be there for much longer!

You sound lovely OP, very welcoming and thoughtful Smile I don’t think a tiny baby will add much to the business but my main worry would be storing all of the new things they buy. Could you ask them to hold fire on buying lots and lots of clothes, toys, etc until they’re in their own place?

OP offered them to stay with her so that they can save in order to get on the property ladder, why on earth would the OP incur the (huge) cost of building work that might only encourage them to stay longer?

OP if they need £15k how long do they propose that that will take them? Another baby (therefore less space) should encourage them to save harder. As much as you enjoy having them, be careful that they don't expect you to give up more space in order to make themselves more comfortable. You have been very generous already!

I'd there isnt going to be much of an age gap between the first and second presumably you already have high chair, cot etc taking up room so the only extra thing they will need would be somewhere for DC1 to sleep when DC2 takes the cot.

Why should the OP pay out for a granny flat in her own house?!?

Thank you for the kind responses so far everyone. Thanks
I have a large family myself 4DC and these are my first DCG, I love the warmth and feeling of a large family around me. Hence how we got here Grin

I have a large garage but I don't think we will be converting that, it's been mentioned before but ideally they're really trying to get their own place and this would be best for everyone - even though I will be devastated when they leave!

I agree they do already have all the stuff a newborn needs - Moses basket, high chair, lots of unisex clothes etc. There will be around 18 months age difference between DC1 and 2. On the grand scheme of things it's really just their bedroom I think they'd feel a bit cramped! A cot and a Moses/crib next to them either side - but as mentioned - it is only temporary...

You mentioned you had 4 DC of your own, does that mean you have any other bedrooms that they would be able to put DC1 into once DC2 arrives?

Get rid of whatever they don’t need via marketplace/eBay.
Ikea Kaplan with baskets for everything against one wall.
Watch Marie Kondo or The Home Edit on Netflix and go minimalist

*Ikea Kallax, not Kaplan

Do you have a usable loft for ease of storage?
Is there room for a comfy bedroom chair so your dd can have some quiet time with her baby and ds?
