Should we turn the playroom into an extra bedroom?

Help!

Ok so at the minute we have 5 children and are wanting to have one more in a couple of years.

We have four bedrooms - one huge one with an en suite for three girls, one box room for the eldest, only boy, a small double for DH and me and a nursery for the baby (girl).

We have a playroom downstairs that would definitely fit a bed, wardrobe, desk, drawers etc to make it into a bedroom. I'm wondering whether to put my eldest girl (9 years old) in there.

What would everyone else do??

I wouldn’t put a 9 year old downstairs-you should sleep downstairs. Each to their own but 5 children is terrible for the environment.

Oh

So where would the 6th one sleep? Where would all the stuff in the playroom go?

Why do you need to have more children? Have you no concern for the environment?

orangeblosssom · 01/05/2020 08:12

Just purchase a bigger house with 7-8 bedrooms.

BirthdayKake · 01/05/2020 08:14

The 6th one would have the nursery. If it's a boy then it'll eventually have it the room to himself, if it's a girl then she'd share with the youngest girl.

I'm the queen of decluttering and quite the minimalist so playroom stuff doesn't worry me :)

We love this area so not planning on moving. Soz.

So where does the one who is currently in the nursery sleep?

So if you are minimalist do the children have many playthings?

WilheldivaHater · 01/05/2020 08:19

I wouldn't put one of the kids downstairs. If you turn it into a bedroom it should be your bedroom.

BirthdayKake · 01/05/2020 08:19

She would move to the huge bedroom as at that point, there'd only be two in there.

Yes they have everything they could possibly need. Apart from a trampoline. I draw the line at trampolines.

It sounds like you don't really have the space for more children. Teenagers will definitely wants and need privacy and their own space.

Abbccc · 01/05/2020 08:20

Do they use the playroom? If they do I wouldn't get rid of it. It's really useful to have a space that isn't someone's bedroom where they can all play. Could you let your 9 year old have the baby's room, put the baby in the girls' room and the new baby in your bedroom?

TheMandalorian · 01/05/2020 08:22

Honestly I think you should be satisfied with the large amount of children you already have. You also need to buy a bigger house to accommodate them all.
If you asked me in real life I would make polite noises but secretly judge this decision.

BirthdayKake · 01/05/2020 08:24

@Abbccc weird you should say that as I'm grossly organised so was planning on making a diary over the next month to see how much they use it 😳 especially with them all being off school. It's used a fair amount for the PlayStation, but we have another one in the living room and a Nintendo Switch as well. I do agree with the space for them all to play though. This was DH's idea but it's sort of grown on me. There wouldn't really be enough space to have baby in our room permanently

Son should move downstairs, eldest girl gets box room, you existing baby gets the big roon, and your new baby gets the nursery

twinkleprincess · 01/05/2020 08:25

I really thank you need to think long term here.

When the girls are 11/12 they are not going to want to share with much younger siblings. What about if they want to have a friend over, what about if they get a boyfriend/girlfriend

If I've read correctly there is 9 years difference in the oldest and youngest girl? Can you imagine being 16 and trying to do homework for GCSEs whilst sharing a room with potentially 4 other siblings.

I'm sorry but it is a terrible set up and you should considering moving or renovating the house for more space. Especially if you want to consider another.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/05/2020 08:26

For the 3 sharing how do they have their own space and privacy?

Where will they all do their schoolwork, studying for exams? What do they do when they have friends over and don’t want their siblings joining in?

BirthdayKake · 01/05/2020 08:28

I probably wouldn't move my son downstairs. He's currently in the room next to us and I like that as he has additional needs. Plus, my eldest daughter would probably benefit a lot more from the space as she likes to play and be creative and have friends over sometimes etc

BirthdayKake · 01/05/2020 08:30

I don't have time to answer all of the questions as I need to go set them up for today's home school, sorry. Education is very important to me so they all have space to study etc.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/05/2020 08:30

So what happens when the other girls get to the point when they would benefit from more space and be creative and want friends round?

Perch · 01/05/2020 08:33

Do you really think you SHOULD have more children? Even though you WANT them? You can’t properly house the ones you have??

WriteAndErase · 01/05/2020 08:33

This feels like a wind up post but I'll play along.

You need to not have another child and concentrate on the quality of life for the ones you have.

The eldest girl needs space to do school work, she's going to be getting more and more in the years to come and can't focus with younger siblings ha about.

Put the eldest girl in the nursery room with a cabin bed with desk under.

Other two girls share a room.

Boy has a room

Parents and baby go in the big room with en-suite.

Keep the playroom, it's valuable play space.

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/05/2020 08:34

Six children is downright irresponsible. Take a look at the state of the world around you and just think a bit.

MrsJoshNavidi · 01/05/2020 08:34

OP, you seem to be planning as if the kids are going to stay the ages they are now forever!
I don't think you have enough space for 5 children, let alone 6. In this day and age they may be living with you well into their 20s (mine are Sad).
Have you thought about having 8 adults/almost adults living in one house? Regardless of how many bedrooms you have.

Perch · 01/05/2020 08:35

Ahhh after reading your last updates are you not just being goady? Every update is a drip drip of information putting you in even a worse light. I struggle to believe this tbh.
