Are bunk beds good idea?

Need to move my DS7 &DS4 into same room for new baby. We can fit 2 single beds in but it will be a squeeze. Bunk beds would give them much more play space. I'm not considering the ones with thin ladder treads, it'll either be medium treads or ones which have stairs. Do they sleep well in bunks? Any issues i wont think of?

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for bunk bed recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best bunk beds page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful.

I’m also curious! Thinking of buying them for my 2 and 3 yr old. 3 yr old is almost 4 and quite mature but she’d have to be in the top bunk.

AveEldon · 01/05/2018 10:48

Headroom on the bottom bunk can be an issue

DairyisClosed · 01/05/2018 10:50

Sounds like a good idea get one of the ones with stairs that have storage underneath. The only problem will be when they start fighting over who gets to go on top

The8thMonth · 01/05/2018 10:52

I have a 6 yr old and 4 year old boys. They share a triple bunk. It's wooden and very solid. The 6 year old has the top, 4 year middle and guests use bottom bed. They love it. Never had problems with them getting in and out, even at night. They have always shared a room. If anything, it's the top bunk clearance to the ceiling which is slightly low.

The8thMonth · 01/05/2018 10:54

I guess the triple bunk solved the problem of who gets the top as neither boy feels like they are on the bottom

Pandora1box · 01/05/2018 11:02

My two girls have got bunk beds and they love them (6 and 4). We got the ones with shelving along one side of each bed which do take up more space but also gives them an area for their possessions.

The main negative I have about bunk beds is changing the top bed can be an absolute bugger! The mattress is far to heavy for me to move alone so I always have to have help from DH when changing their beds.

Myse1f · 01/05/2018 11:08

We've always used bunks and high beds. No trouble sleeping at all.
Older child may want to read/go to sleep later and younger may want dark: you can get a tent/curtains for this to put around the bottom bed.

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/05/2018 11:22

My two are only a year apart and had bunks from about 6 and 5 by their choice to share a room. We didn't have an issue re top and bottom as younger DS was scared of heights! He quite liked his "cave".

One thing I would say is that I think it's important to properly seal the top mattress (and any mattress really). You can now get zip bags for mattresses but we just put two mattress covers on, one top and one bottom and also did the same with sheets. the sheet was just to make the view from underneath nicer but wrapping/enclosing the mattress means that the person on the bottom isn't getting a lung full of dust and skin every time the one on the top moves in bed.

GingerIvy · 01/05/2018 11:25

My 8 and 11yo have bunk beds in their room. Works fine, as the 11yo can lay up and in his bed and read if he wants to get away from everyone, and 8yo can get in his lower bunk and close the curtain and read.

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/05/2018 11:26

Also recommend Bunky lights if they still do them for reading in bed. Also some people give them their own privacy by putting bunks in middle of the room and boarding up the open side by the stairs so that they each access bed from their own side. We didn't do that as mine were happy to share until they were about 11 and 10 and then moved back into their own rooms again.

Pandora- i looked at these bunks but thought the bars on top looked very low compared to some, are they?

We have the same bunk beds as @Pandora1box girls are 3 and 4 no problems so far (only had them 2 months)

happymumof4crazykids · 01/05/2018 13:46

The bars are low but she hasn't fallen out we put a memory foam mattress as you couldn't use a thick a mattress

Pandora1box · 01/05/2018 14:01

Hello, no we have found the safely bars fine. My 6 year old is up the top and is generally quite a nervy child but she has been absolutely fine. Obviously we have rules about not being silly / jumping on the top bunk but no problems

welliwasntexpectingthat · 01/05/2018 14:03

So the mattress on any top bunk should be thinner should it?

Anyone know any companies that do bunks with stairs on the side/front? Kids Funtime Beds have 8-10 wk order time!

Don't go for metal. They squeek no matter what you do. Drive me mad.

RippleEffects · 09/05/2018 20:38

We had our boys in two high beds when they were younger and shared a room. They then each had a curtained under bed den/ play space with shelves for their toys.

Hideandgo · 10/05/2018 10:13

That’s a nice idea ripple!

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 13/05/2018 18:25

My eldest two shared in bunks from about age 4&5 to 8&9

No issues

Ds1 is 10 and has the bunk in his room now. He chooses to sleep on bottom so he seems not to have head issues

GraceLeeper · 15/05/2018 04:42

Have no problem having a bunk bed for my kids, Just choose the bunks with built in drawers so it could save space. :)

GrabbyMcGrabby · 15/05/2018 05:23

I'd do the same as Ripple. Changing high sleepers can be difficult, but you will find a work around and the extra space is worth having.

I hate the amount of space lost by beds! I would replace all of ours with high sleepers or fold down beds - you can get ones which attach to the wall.

welliwasntexpectingthat · 15/05/2018 12:42

I went for the ones with stairs at the side, very excited now!!!

We've been using this: jysk.co.uk/bedroom/bunk-beds-cabin-beds/bunk-bed-vestervig-75-120x200-natural since my 2 older ones were 1 (nearly 2) and 3. It's been brilliant, and still is. The bottom bunk is 120cm (basically a small double) so lots of space to add extra pillows and cuddly toys to protect smaller ones from falling out, plus big enough that 2 kids can easily top and tail without getting in each other's way for a sleepover.
