AIBU she is forcing me to use small car for 3 kids in both g seats

We have 3 children, 6,2 and 1 and I had a Renault Grande Espace which broke down and is now dead. My husband has a Range Rover Evoque which he drives to his work car park and drives it home again in the evenings. He bought a golf gti to use untill we can afford to get another bigger car for me and me use the Range Rover. He has now decided because there are a few footprints on the back of the seat that he wants to use that and me use the golf even though it is a very tight squeeze with the drivers seat too far forwards. I have offered to put a cover on the back of the seat and have been taking their shoes off. I can understand he doesn't want the kids in the car but it is just untill march. What do you all think?

I'm torn here.
TBH I don't think a Golf is that small. The car seats all fit in safely right? Could the 6yo (with a booster I assume?) sit behind the drivers seat therefore there would be plenty room for you to drive comfortably?
If it was a polo, mini, yaris, etc I'd see your point but imo a golf is a sizeable compact car.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 03/01/2017 15:05

Many cars aren't big enough for 3 child seats across the back seat (and 6 year olds are much safer in 'high-backed' boosters, if you've ever seen the film-clip of what happens in a crash, and they take more room than the 'cushion type')

The other solution is that he trades the golf in for something of a more suitable size?

Did you miss this bit:

So yes, I guess the car seats all fit, so long as the driver isn't in the car. Hmm

And yes I agree with SDT's DH, the Evoque is a girly car.

Figure17a · 03/01/2017 15:18

I'm not sure the evoque is much bigger than the golf?

However, he sounds horrid. Are the children allowed in the house? Children sometimes leave marks. Every once in a while you wipe them off

hippyhippyshake · 03/01/2017 15:21

So what is the point of having the big car if the children aren't allowed in it?

hippyhippyshake · 03/01/2017 15:22

And don't normal people just pay for a top valetting service before returning the car?

minipie · 03/01/2017 15:25

Can he not ask to change the Evoque for something more practical and less pristine?

(I know nothing about company lease cars)

GruochMacAlpin · 03/01/2017 15:27

My DH is obsessed very concerned about cars being kept nicely.

In your situation he'd get seat covers.

DailyFail1 · 03/01/2017 15:30

If it's a company car it should be him using it not you. You really need your own car

notangelinajolie · 03/01/2017 15:31

My DH doesn't get why your DH would want an Evoque in the first place. He is of the same opinion as other posters. Evoques are for girls ... so really it should be yours Smile

ShyTallSun · 03/01/2017 15:43

I think your OH is being a bit selfish and the safety of your children should come before any financial penalty from the lease company. If the driving position in the Golf is uncomfortable and you're legs are not as stretched as they should be or the back of the seat is too upright, your driving will be impacted. Your reactions might be slower, your arms might be that little bit too close to the steering wheel for good manoeuvrability, you might not be able to go from accelerator to clutch (assuming manual) as quickly. It doesn't sound like a safe way to drive.
For the sake of a bit of mud (and there is loads on the back of both front seats in my car which easily comes off with a bit of elbow grease) I think your OH should 'suck it up' and put his kids and his wife's safety first.
In our house the kids go in the biggest, safest car and luckily for me that happens to be mine but if my OH was taking the kids around all day it goes without saying that he would get the nice, big, safe car. Good luck.

GruochMacAlpin · 03/01/2017 15:48

DailyFail that depends on the rules of the specific scheme.

DailyFail1 · 03/01/2017 15:52

I don't know a single scheme that would allow the spouse to be the main driver?

TheFairyCaravan · 03/01/2017 15:54

I don't understand this bit me use the golf even though it is a very tight squeeze with the drivers seat too far forwards

We've got a Golf. DH has the seat as far back as it can go, as he is 6'4 and I can comfortably sit behind him. Our kids can fit behind him too, it's not overly comfortable for them because they're over 6'.

I would have thought for the money you spent on a Golf GTI you could have easily bought a larger car that would have fitted you all in, TBH.

AyeAmarok · 03/01/2017 15:58

Daily our scheme allows it, and I don't think that's unusual. My previous employer was the same. It's a perk as part of the salary package.

DeleteOrDecay · 03/01/2017 16:03

Golf GTI's are quite expensive aren't they? Couldn't you have just bought a bigger car for the same amount that the Golf cost? I'm no expert on cars to be fair.

Regardless, your H is being precious. Why on earth does he need such a large car for going to and from work? Company lease or not.

Spudlet · 03/01/2017 16:05

My DH had a classic BMW when we met. He loved that car. It was modified to make it even nicer. He would go for drives just for fun. It had a name and everything.

He got rid of it because it didn't have isofix points, and now he drives my old Micra while I drive DS around in an old Scenic.

This is because he is a good husband and father, rather than a selfish cockwomble.

HTH your 'D'H Wink
